Problem:

Computer started to slow down all of a sudden, on startup then with programs; the my p3 750 would haet up right along with it (hotter than it normally would). Took my exta HD out and it sped right back up and cooled off, put it back in and the d@nm thing slowed again. Now it's out but I want it back what do I do. Checked the jumpers with factory settings, could it be software?? I only have MP3s and .zip files on the extra.... hmmmm.... please help...

System:

MoBo; ASUS CUSL2-C w/ P3 750
OS; Win ME
Primary HD; 10GB Maxtor 7200rpm
Secondary; 40GB Maxror 5400rpm

They are on the same cable into the same slot on mobo...

Something with that specific drive. I have seen funky things with a lot of componets. This way you can either rule out the drive or it could be the problem.

Could it be that there's no more free space on the harddrive.
Keep in mind that any harddrive, no matter how big it is, gets slower the more data you save on it.

well the dive that appears to making it slow is 40GB and it has 7MB of stuff on it; no programs or OS stuff on it though...

First off.. I just have to say, your topic kicks ass :D :D

It could be a power problem, what is your power supply's wattage?

Try a small experiment, set both drives to PIO mode 4 in BIOS peripheral setting to check for improvement, perhaps simultaneous ATA-33/ATA-66/ATA-100 mode conflicts.

Tried the other cable thing already, would any conflicts arise setting them on different cables- master HD/cdr on one secondary HD/DVD on the other?

?PIO? one is set to UDMA 4 the other to UDMA 5. Is that what u r talking about?

Thanks for the responses....

If you are burning from hd that is on same channel as cdr you may have buffer underruns if you try to furn at fast speeds...I would put cd-r on same channel of hd that is the most likely not the main source to burn from...

try the hd's on seperate channels....

Back to the heat thing...How much did the heat of the cpu rise when both hdds where in? Run with case open...Are the hd's real close to one another in case? Like the new drive below the main drive and those causing the main drive to not ventilate the heat properly...Look at spacing them apart if you can or direct a case fan to blow air in between them...

Well for right now they are working again... after a format of the secondary (which did nothing) taking it out for a few days and screwing with the bios it's working ok (nothing on it yet but the slowdown is not there).... we'll see......

Thanks for all the info
