More car audio stuff!

My father is replacing his subs/box in his van ('03 Chevy 2500 Van) and is looking to get some more thump from his subs. He listens to nothing but rock, old and new. I'm pretty knowledgable when it comes to car audio, but I've never looked into sealed enclosures. My question is this: would it be worth considering a sealed box to help "fill" his van? The subs are in an open area and have nowhere to fire off of (as opposed to being inside of a trunk where the subs have a certain amount of air to work with). What would work best for such a large vehicle/so much open air?

Edit: Updated! :D

He'll be getting a good set of subs (looking at 2 12" JL W3's)...how much does a "good" sealed enclosure go for?

i went from listening to rap and bass with two 15"'s in my explorer to light-rock easy listening with a single 12". The enclosure depends on the sub too. Ported = louder, but less SQ. Sealed = not as loud, but tighter bass.

Would a bandpass be better or worse for his application? Does a bandpass muddy the clarity at all?

Let's just say he's very young at heart, he's into a lot of newer rock than most guys his age :)

Nutbucket, thanks, he's looking for 2 though :) there's a lot of air to move in his van heh

Ok, my father just got a new amp (MTX 6001 ... I'm not a huge fan of it, but whatever but it has decent wattage I guess), he's now going to be buying a new enclosure and new subs. He has 2 Infinity Reference series subs right now and he's happy with it but knows he could get something better suited for the amp he has, so he's going to return them and get something better. He likes the idea of doing 3x10" subs, but is still thinking about sticking with a 2x12" sub setup. I'm sure 3 10's will be enough to fill his van, and the response will be much better I'm sure, but 2-12's will be more affordable by far. He's looking to stick around $300 for the subs (he can deal with $150 a pop for 12's)...

So, so far it seems he should go for a plain-jane sealed box, I'm not sure if a bandpass is what's right for him, and I know a ported setup is a no-no for his application at this point.

Anyways, what are some solid affordable and *clear* subs he could buy? I keep telling him to shop online so we can install it and save money and he just goes to Circuit City and has them install it *smacks forehead* I want him to do the right thing with these subs if I can help it :)

You might want to look in to IDMAX subs...great SQ and very loud...I'm sure a couple of them in a sealed enclosure would make him happy

Woah, just looked some up, they seem expensive  I'm sure they'd make him happy, but they'd probably make his wallet unhappy :(
