I recently got a Cendyne CD-RW drive that turned out to be a rebadged BenQ 48x16. I know, I know, friends don't let friends buy BenQs.

That aside, I've had a strange problem with it. It will not burn cue/bin files properly. I've been using FireBurner. It appears to burn fine, but when I put the disc back in and try to explore it, I get an "incorrect function" error message.
When that happened a couple of times, I assumed it might be a problem with the drive. After all, it is a BenQ. Just to be sure, I used a program to extract all the files & directories from the BIN file to my hard drive. I then opened Nero, I dragged and dropped that folder with the extracted files, and it burned correctly without a problem.

What could possibly cause it to burn a bin/cue file incorrectly but the extracted files correctly? In both FireBurner and Nero I was sure to tell the programs to burn at the speed at which the CDR was rated: 16X. Is it possible that FireBurner was ignoring that and instead burning at a speed too fast for the CDR? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I guess that's true. Didn't even cross my mind. But if there's a problem with the bin/cue, wouldn't you think that its extracted contents would also be corrupt, and therefore burning them would also result in a bad CD?

i dont actually know what you mean by "extracted data" from the bin/cue. all ive ever done is burn them. and teh only time they have issues is when they themselfs are messed up

Okay, my mistake for not being detailed enough.

Basically, you know the BIN file stores all the data that's to be burned on the CD -- all the files, directory structure, etc.

So what I did is I used a program to examine the contents of the BIN file. I then extracted all the files & directories stored in the BIN file to my hard drive. Basically, I had all the files stored in the BIN file saved to my hard drive, instead of burning them to a CD.

I then opened Nero and dragged those files in to be burned. And the burned CD works fine. So burning the files directly worked fine, but burning from the BIN does not.

gonna say somethin is messed up with teh BIN then if that worked.

and seeing as it burned fine that way you can always just rip a new .bin/cue

Okay, thanks a lot for your insight. Maybe I'll just try to burn another bin/cue and see if that works any better.

And if it doesn't, I guess I'll still be able to dump the contents and burn with Nero anyway. So it's not a catastrophe -- just a minor annoyance right now.

Again, thanks for the help. :)
