More ATI/AMD rumors

Does the end of ATI ( if it happens ) mean the end of mid range and high end cards based on ATI's tech ? Since their talking about IGP ? Better not, or I see no time better like the present to go GREEN..................
 
why again ?
if the ati brand dies then graphic cards will come under the new amd brand. no biggie. except it allow better marketing from amd.

you don't buy a 6 billion dollar company only to end up using the least advanced of its techs.
 
The interesting thing to me is the idea of them getting rid of the ATI name, but still making Intel chipsets for a while. An Intel motherboard with an AMD chipset... 😕

We might have had a similar thread a while back, but the news posted in HKEPC is from today so I'm assuming that it is based on some new information.

Actually you would. If the tech you are interested in is the integrated chipset market which by the way is not all that prehistoric technology wise. A lot of analysts just have the notion that AMD just wants a piece of the platform pie. I guess they were just tired of only making money selling just CPU's and that flash mem. Intel makes HUGE moneybags in the graphics dept. Even though the IGP's they have are far from stellar, they at least have it to sell for business's usage. Am I making any sense here? I feel like I got lost in my own post LOL!!!.

 
it's cause they want to be able to offer a whole amd platform, cpu, chipset, and video, like intel can. There is a huge market of people that would just rather have something all by the same company, regardless of performance. they feel they can trust one company better than a bunch.
 
1. I personally can not recall any one single take over where the company being taken over kept its name (and yes, AMD took over ATi).

2. If all AMD wanted was some cheapass integrated solution, then they can just buy out S3 Graphics or Matrox for 1/5 the price (or less). They didn't need to buy out ATi unless AMD wanted to plug a powerful graphics solution into their HT bus. Imagine an HT bus slot that allowed the graphics solution to directly write to memory without passing through the north bridge, coupled together with DX10's partitioning of graphics memory space...all of a sudden, you have a virtual 3GB video memory card that knew how to very quickly swap out textures without programmer intervention...now you get the idea. =)
 
Cool, I never heard about that one. Then it's now in all, but one, instances where the company that was took over never got to keep their name. (and in the Futureshop case, I'm guessing that they retained the name since BB didn't make inroads into Canada until then, and that Futureshop was much more well known as a local (i.e. Canadian) company than BB as a local (i.e. American) company to Canadians...that or I'm just covering for the fact I made a miscalculation 😉 )

Actually that makes a fair bit of sense. I was reading that AMD is very close to releasing a quad-core CPU. My thought would be to make two of those cores "CPUs", make the third core a "GPU", and make the fourth core some kind of physics processor (shouldn't be too much of a stretch for the ATI people to come up with).

If that type of thing could be pulled off effectively, it would essentially by-and-large kill off nVidia. Intel has historically been very good at creating its own chipsets. Without the need for discreet graphics cards, I'm not sure what nVidia would do. Perhaps by necessity they would merge with Intel to copy the AMD/ATI approach.

Interesting times are ahead, that's certain.

Lots of merging/buyouts the last little while.

AMD takes over ATi.
Gigabyte & Asus merge, but with a 51% stake going to Gigabyte...which makes it seems less of a merger to me.

Look around, there are actually quite a few. It is very much depended on how valuable the brand is. Cisco took over Linksys and still kept Linksys name. Dell bought Alienware and Alienware still exits. Kmart bought Sears and Sears is still around. SBC bought ATnT and changes its name to the acquired company's. HP still used Compaq for system brand.

-Ford taking a controlling stake of Jaguar (you don't see too many Ford XK8's on the road)

-Best Buy taking over Future Shop in Canada
-Wendy's buying Tim Hortons in Canada

It happens, especially when the two companies are not direct competitors (such as AMD and ATI, which catered primarily to the CPU and Graphics markets, respectively). I see no reason for ATI not to continue to remain the established name in Graphics; for motherboards, it could very well change completely (AMD Xpress?).
