'Arrested Development' Producer Says 17 More Episodes Are In The Works

More "Arrested Development" is on the way, according to the show's executive producer Brian Grazer. Rumors have been swirling about the possibility of a fifth season since Netflix resurrected the show for a fourth in 2013, but in a new interview with Grantland's Bill Simmons, Grazer confirmed that there will be 17 more episodes of the show.

At the 24:30 minute mark in the video below, he says, "We're going to do another 17 episodes, so stay tuned for 'Arrested Development.'" When asked to confirm if the episodes were in the works, Netflix declined to comment.

I really hope they are better than the 1st Netflix season. It just wasn't... funny.
It was way too disjointed and forced.

I have Michael Cera's cast script from one of the 3rd season episodes. Frigging love that show. Glad to hear it's coming back.

I would really hope it's better than the Netflix season. It was clear during that season that for cost reasons they didn't want to have all or even several of the main characters in the same scene any more than necessary, and to me it felt really disjointed and didn't have the spark of the original. I was also startled and disappointed by the way Portia DeRossi looks now - she is way too thin and the plastic surgery has gone too far.

I totally missed the AD bus, so I ended up binge watching the whole show in a short time period. When seen this way, the Netflix season kinda sucked... a lot. The other seasons are all gold though.

Ugh. First Netflix season was horrible. They really need all the people in each episode instead of just a couple and focusing on one person each episode the way the did.

Agreed 100%. It was quite a let down. After reading up a bit about the circumstances of the production it all began to make more sense. They couldn't get everyone together schedule-wise, and so they ended up with a lot of individual story lines, when the strength of the original was all in the ensemble.

Edit: yeah, as several above me also said :).

Yeah, that's why I said "disjointed" in my earlier post -- the couldn't get everyone together at the same time and it killed the spark and chemistry. I think there was too much NOT in the house and in "odd" places too. AD was at it's best when a collection of them were in a confined space (the house) and it was word play on word play on misunderstandings and ignorance.

God... when it was GOOD, it was a good as comedies get.

Hopefully Netflix (and everyone involved) knows what didn't work last time and does it right this time around.

PS: Totally agree with Portia de Rossi comment too. Though I'd still....

I must be the only person who actually really liked the Netflix season. It was different, didn't totally work in all the same ways, but worked really well in some other ways. It was designed for binge watching in the ways the other seasons couldn't be.

Another 17 episodes is kind of weird though, the whole thing was building up to a movie.

I liked the Netflix season, but I don't think anyone was expecting it to be more drama than the old Arrested Development, or so non-standard/non-linear.

The creators explained what the season would be like before it aired so I wasn't really surprised by it. If anything, I didn't think the episodes would be as interconnected as they were.

I do think they had to make compromises, maybe not because of funding but because they were working around the work schedules of some of the actors (especially Michael Cera)

Giving this thread a necro because it deserves one. Two bits of AD news.

1) Netflix has officially greenlit the long-rumored 5th season to shoot later this year and air in 2018.

2) Mitch Hurwitz has completed a re-cut of the 4th season to integrate things into a single timeline rather than each episode following specific characters. The re-cut also changes episode timing, instead of 15 episodes of 30 minutes it will be 22 episodes of 20-21 minutes to fit a normal TV format. Sounds like thy could be preparing that for a regular TV release in conjunction with the new season. There have also been new voiceovers written and Ron Howard has recorded them to hopefully tighten up the storyline and make it feel less disjointed.

@GagHalfrunt that is incredible news about season 4 being re-worked. It had promise but it was so sloppy and disjointed that it just never came together. Hopefully this helps cure some of that before the new season is released.

Agreed. Some of the material was good, but it just never came together as a whole. It would be nice to see how it plays edited to have a more natural flow. And hopefully they learned something and don't repeat the same mistake with S5.

Similar to how Dexter ended after season 4, AD was complete after 3.

I won't let anyone tell me otherwise.

There was a picture/meme released when the new season was announces and it said something along the lines of "Together again, at the same time. Whether they like it or not"
Which to me implies that rather than the mix-and-match they did in the previous season, they learned from their mistakes and the howling of the internet that the Bluths will have more screen time together as a group versus scattering like before.
