More algebra help...

amy has 8 dollars less than maria. together they have 30. how much does each girl have?

a = amy
m = maria
t = total

a = m - 8

a + (m - 8) = 30

a = 30 - m - 8
a = 22 - m

thats what i've tried...

and this one:

jims weekly pay is 2/3s of alicias. together they earned 600 dollars per week. what is each persons weekly pay?

i don't know where to start.

you went wrong after here. "together they have 30" means a + m = 30

try again 🙂

600 = A + (0.66 * A)
J = 600 - A

Amy has $11, Maria has $19.

yes but why???

a = m - 8
a + m = 30

^ move the m from the first equation to the left and you'll get:

a - m = -8
a + m = 30

^ add those two equations together:
2A = 22
A = 11

^substitute A (11) into one of those equations and you'll get M (19)

j=2/3a and a+j=600

a+2/3a=600
3/3a +2/3a=600
5/3a=600
a=600*3/5
a=360

therefore

j=2/3(360)
j=240
