so yesterday i went out to a bar with a few friends. one of em drove out, and he had one too many drinks so he asked me to drive everyone to the next bar (i was ok to drive, since i didn't drink at that bar)

we drive up to the next place, and i immediately find parking (on allen st near rivington, for those who are familiar with nyc). it was about 11pm.

We got back to the car around 130am, and there was a ticket on the window!!! apparently you're not allowed to park there rfom 12am-3am for street cleaning!! wtf? thats the first time i've ever encountered street cleaning rules at midnight!!

sooo its a $65 ticket, and since i was the one who parked the car, i guess im responsible for the ticket? i just met the guy, so its not like hes a good friend or nothing...

edit/update
well i offered last nite when we saw the ticket...and he shrugged me off...i dunno if it was because he was drunk, or what. but i called my friend to tell her to get him to come out again tonite so i can give him some money. and there were four of us last nite.

Send the ticket back to the police with a picture of Chuck Norris crouched and ready to attack.

His car his ticket. As the driver, he chose to drink and he chose to let another person drive. It's still his responsibility.

yeap. he was a idiot for getting drunk. you were an idiot for parking where you should not have. i would offer to split the ticket with him.

but since you put "i just met the guy, so its not like hes a good friend or nothing... " and even asked this. i figure you have low morals and are just looking for an excuse to stiff the guy.

He was with you; he should have noticed and told you to move the car. His car, his ticket.

My sister didn?t pay a parking ticket in Montreal a few months ago. 3 weeks ago she got pulled over for an unrelated event and realized her driver license had expired the day before. She got a $400. ticket, got her car confiscated for a month and has to pay for the car storage fee and towing, another $400.

Tell him to pay HIS ticket or he might end up very sorry.

Well if you can swing the cash then I'd say pay for it.

I remember years ago in Key West I pointed out a parking spot to a friend and she parked there, got a little $20 ticket for parking over night or something like that and got all pissy saying I should pay for her ticket.

I didn't tell her she had to park there overnight though, just pointed out that it was an open spot.

Hmmm, I change my mind. It should be split with everyone there. Everyone who rode in the vehicle is equally responsible!

You took responsiblity when you took the keys, as the one sober person, you should have noticed.

This "its not my fault" or "someone else should pay" mentallity is getting old. People have to start taking responsibilty for there own actions.

You took the keys, you took responsibiltity, you should pay.

His car, his request for you to drive, his fault for being too drunk to not notice you were parked illegally. 100%, he should pay.

I agree with everything in this post, but I believe everyone that was there should just chip in. Assuming 4 people were in the car, have everyone pony up $16.25. Tell them it's a lot cheaper than the DUI they COULD have gotten...

i say go this route, but the good thing to do would be to hand him half of the cost + the ticket so he can take care of it.

He should pay, it's his car. You did him favour enough.

yeah. not completely your not and not completely his.

in the end it's his responsibility to pay it, since it's his car and nothing will happen to you if you don't pay it. but splitting it seems fair and $32.50 is cheap

Rip the ticket and throw it away and don't tell anyone.. If the owner is drunk, he won't remember. It will come to bite him maybe month later..

that's how i feel. if you were driving and a cop pulled you over for speeding, you'd have to pay it. you're the one who did something illegal, not him. nobody asked you to park illegally, they just asked you to drive. of course, it's a royal bummer and a half, and it would be great if everyone pitched in, but i don't think they are morally obligated to do so.

Perhaps, but the OP was doing the driver a favor he did not originally intend to provide. He did not originally agree to be a designated driver until his friend began drinking irresponsibly, considering the friend was supposed to be driving.

Technically, you don't have to do a thing. However, if you like the guy, you could offer to split the ticket. Besides, the owner of a car needs to always read the parking signs, especially in NYC since others can easily misread them. Having a few drinks is no excuse.
