highlights:
  • it managers changing server purchasing, update cycle from 7-10 yr to 3 yr cycles. dis-aggregation and short cycles means they will be buying lower end intel chips affecting profit.
  • amd will take marketshare by virtue of being the go to for cloud, small servers will remain intel until cloud becomes the cheaper solution.
  • older enterprise servers still running on software built for win2k so they will continue to replace them with older intel equipment.
  • apu server chips with amd hardware virtualization are especially attractive due to simplicity wrt server rack integration.
  • epyc cache offers absurd performance benefits.

that was a good podcast. More people should listen to it to get an idea how the enterprise things work.

it's pretty rare that we get such an unfiltered viewpoint of the purchasing decision process. the guy in his previous position actually got make the final decision on what the IT department bought, so him going thru the factors that constrains their options is very first hand.
he's working for the finance industry now but their solution to the intel security problems is pretty novel but very bottom dollar brass tacks.
