Fahrenheit 7/26: Michael Moore: I will crash Kerry's party
By Dave Wedge
Thursday, July 22, 2004

Democrats were abuzz and Republicans aghast yesterday as Bush-hating filmmaker Michael Moore unveiled plans to descend upon, and steal some thunder from, John F. Kerry's hometown nominating party.

Moore will team up with the Democratic presidential primary's chief Bush critic, Howard Dean for one of his three Hub appearances in the first two days of the convention.

Republicans said the "Fahrenheit 9/11'' creator will reflect poorly as a surrogate for Kerry.

"It's just another example of the pessimism and the conspiracy theories coming from John Kerry [related, bio] and John Kerry surrogates,'' said Kevin Madden, spokesman for the Bush-Cheney campaign.

"We're seeing a lot of hate and vitriol from this John Kerry celebrity set - Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg. It shows that their intent is to frame anger as an agenda.''

Democrats, though careful to say Moore won't outshine Kerry, brimmed with excitement.

"Clearly the star of the week will be Sen. Kerry and Sen. (John) Edwards, but having Michael Moore in Boston to enjoy the events just adds a lot of excitement to everything else going on,'' Massachusetts Democratic Party spokeswoman Jane Lane said.

Kerry, whose campaign has gone out of its way to avoid Moore and his movie's controversial claims, wouldn't comment on his appearances.

What the hell does Goldberg have to do with any of this? lol So she made some off-color remarks, so what?

Moore, I can understand.

No kidding.

Dennis Miller made a joke implying Kerry and Edwards were gay and in love. Did that make the "liberal media"? Nope.

She was a guest speaker at a Kerry fundraiser which is when the off color remarks were made.

I'm aware of that. Still I call it stretch (though understandable, given the timing) to mention her in the same breath as Moore.

Both Celebs, both behind Kerry, and now with Moore going to the convention both speaking in the same place as Kerry...makes sense to me.

So the left has Moore as a surrogate for attacks, the right has Cheney. Ones running as VP the other is a film maker.

Yup sometimes the "MASS" doesn't pay attention to the jokes and other times it creates a FIRESTORM.

You never know.

Chances are Whoopie was only noticed because she lost her deal with Slim Fast....just like Rhondstat was kicked out of the Casino and the Dixie chicks lost some $$$$....if Miller was fired or fined I am sure it would have made it in the paper....also Miller was only allegedly speaking at a Rally, not a high brow fundraiser as Goldberg was...

Lets try some real links conjur, like CNN, CBS, ABC...not that crap, you harp on rip all the time for his links - about time you practiced what you preach. Thanks

Well you can find references to Dennis Miller at a Wisconsin Bush Rally all over the place. The Miller comment wasn't really reported on much, but I saw it mentioned on TV. Here's something from the washingpost:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A50071-2004Jul14.html

Speaking of celebrity endorsements: Dennis Miller, a big backer of Bush, was in Green Bay, Wis., yesterday to warm up the crowd before the prez spoke. Miller made a glancing reference to Whoopi but promised, "In deference to George W. Bush, I will try not to fall to depths that some would in this case."

Then he went on to imply a homosexual attraction between Kerry and Edwards.

"Those two cannot keep their hands off each other, can they?" Miller said. "I think I have a new idea for a new campaign slogan -- use the bumper sticker 'Hey, Get A Room.' "

That's exactly my point!!

The so-called "liberal media" hardly picked up the Dennis Miller off-color joke!

Cable coverage of Whoopi Goldberg's v. Dennis Miller's remarks: 19-2

On July 15, a full week after comedian Whoopi Goldberg made what The New York Times called an "extended sexual pun on the president's surname," for which she was fired from her job as spokeswoman for Slim-Fast on July 14, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, and CNN continued to devote significant primetime attention to her remarks. As The New York Times' Jodi Wilgoren reported, Goldberg's comments came at a July 8 fundraiser for the Kerry-Edwards '04 ticket and the Democratic National Committee. Despite the flurry of media attention Goldberg's comments have continued to receive, comments made by Dennis Miller -- producer and host of CNBC's Dennis Miller -- at a Wisconsin rally for President George W. Bush July 14 drew none of the same media fire, despite the fact that, as Washington Post "Reliable Source" columnist Richard Leiby reported July 15, Miller "impl[ied] a homosexual attraction between Kerry and Edwards."

In the July 15 edition of The Washington Post, Leiby quoted Miller: "Those two cannot keep their hands off each other, can they? ... I think I have a new idea for a new campaign slogan -- use the bumper sticker 'Hey, Get A Room.' "

Media Matters for America reviewed FOX News Channel, MSNBC, and CNN primetime coverage of the hours between 5 pm and 11 pm on July 15, and found that the three cables addressed Whoopi Goldberg's remark a total of 19 times: three times on CNN (once on Lou Dobbs Tonight and twice on Anderson Cooper 360), three times on MSNBC (once on Deborah Norville Tonight and twice on Scarborough Country), and 13 times on the FOX News Channel (five times on The Big Story With John Gibson, three times on Special Report with Brit Hume, once on FOX Report with Shepard Smith, twice on The O'Reilly Factor, and twice on Hannity & Colmes).

In contrast, Dennis Miller's comments were addressed only twice: once on MSNBC and once on CNN. FOX News Channel never reported the story. On MSNBC's Scarborough Country, host and former U.S. Representative Joe Scarborough (R-FL) mentioned Miller as a counterexample to Goldberg, but did not address Miller's implication of a homosexual attraction between Senators Kerry and Edwards, instead focusing on Miller's jabs at other prominent Democrats. Only CNN Crossfire co-host Paul Begala, speaking on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, brought the issue into the spotlight, saying:

BEGALA: I think it's an interesting example of the double standard in the media. Whoopi Goldberg apparently told some jokes people didn't like. I didn't hear them, don't even know what they are and everybody got their panties in a wad and here's this big corporation fires her. Meanwhile yesterday, Dennis Miller at a Bush rally basically implies that John Edwards and John Kerry are gay, then attacks my pal James Carville for the way that he looks and nobody says anything. I doubt CNN has even covered that story today at all. So why is it that a liberal comedian can make fun of President Bush, but she gets fired from her job? A conservative comedian makes really nasty sexual innuendoes about Kerry and Edwards and nobody says anything. So it's a double standard.

Conjur, if anything you are working against yourself, it makes sense the media would touch on the Goldberg comment and the Rhondstat comment as it villianizes the conservatives...here is a group of people who cannot take a joke and they get this woman fired....why bring up a comedian poking fun of Kerry unless of course he loses his job over it....

Guess conjur cannot take a lighthearted joke, wheras Whoopi's directly connected the POTUS with a cooch...big difference IMHO.

Will your hypocrisy never cease?

The jokes were of equal poor taste. Whoopi gets fired over it because of stick-up-the-butt conservatives but then when an equivalent joke is told by one of their celebrity supporters and directed at an opponent, it's suddenly the funniest thing ever.

I haven't actually heard/read the exact quote from Whoopi but, from the sounds of it, it would come off "dirtier" than Miller's. Had Dennis gone a bit farther, we'd surely be hearing about it (imho). While I'd pair the two situations in similar camps, getting too riled up about Miller's comment not taking as much hold doesn't seem worth fighting over. Too many variables involved, including those in attendance, those involved with Slim-Fast and/or other companies, gender, race, and bunnies. I would say it's a tad unfair to have virtually nothing reported on Miller, but it's just hard to say given the little that I actually know.

They were both jokes by celebrities and not elected officials. Niether one deserves to be fired/banned/hung. It's disappointing that the Bush campaign jumped all over the whoopi thing for publicity. They asked for the tapes and talked about it for a week on TV and on the stump. As if Whoopi is on the ticket with Kerry.

I live in CA and I don't even care about the Arnold joke.
