Montreal fans boo Star-Spangled Banner

MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems.

But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout Star-Spangled Banner in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday.

"I'm sure there are a lot of people against the war, but some things people can't control," said New York's Alexei Yashin, who is from Russia. "They were probably showing what they feel about it."

Teammate Mark Parrish, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was upset hearing the boos.

"I came to the game pretty pumped up, but once I heard that it really got me going," Parrish said. "So I guess I can thank them a little bit for getting me more pumped up."

Nope...IIRC we did not do that to them. They made a big fuss about it up here in the Boston papers. Personally I really don't care. They are not from this country, and are free to boo our anthem at a game in their country. Maybe a bit childish, but our goverment and their freedom fries and freedom toast aren't much better.

OMFG I read this thread and the banner at the bottom was advertising Montreal Canadien Jerseys, tickets, and Anti-War Tshirts("What Would Jesus Bomb") LOL!

ahem

Anyway, I'm sorry they booed your anthem. Montreal is quite the vocal place, as a Canadian I know how they can get under your skin. 😉

Yes, they are. Some of the most rabid hockey fans out there ( that's a good thing IMO). If I saw the highlights correctly, it was a pretty chippy game as well was it not? I recall seeing Theodore leaving the crease to go after someone in the corner...

🙂

Here's the thing. The fact is most of the world isn't too happy with the US and it's attack on Iraq right now. Whatever your personal feelings on the matter, you have to expect this stuff to happen. As much as it might upset you, it is their right and is their way of voicing their opinion.

If it bothers you too much, go boo the Canadian anthem at a hockey game near you... 😉

Just don't try it in Canada. Some Hoser will likely hose you. 🙂

Nah, doesn't bother me. I would prefer to actually not have them sung at each game, or at least get singers who will just sing it and not make a performance out of it.

I'm sorry they booed your anthem.......... but it's to be expected in Quebec......... they have like an 80% disapproval rating for the war.

Cheers,
Aquaman
