Monthly Visitor - NPD Sales for February

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
The games industry as a whole is still doing extremely well in sales despite the economy as both hardware and software is selling strong.

February saw every console's sales increase over January....which is actually pretty remarkable considering how few game releases there were for the month. The Wii and 360 saw Year over Year increases while the PS3 essentially remained even.

Hardware

-Wii: 753K +74K (+11%)
-DS: 588K +77K (+15%)
-Xbox 360: 391K +82K (+27%)
-PS3: 276K +73K (+36%)
-PSP: 199K +27K (+16%)
-PS2: 131K +30K (+30%)

On the software side of things, Street Fighter IV came out strong with half a month's worth of sales while Killzone 2 did decent for only two days of sales.

Software

1. Wii Fit with balance board - Nintendo - 644K
2. Street Fighter IV - Xbox 360 - Capcom - 446K
3. Street Fighter IV - PS3 - Capcom - 403K
4. Wii Play with remote - Nintendo - 386K
5. Killzone 2 - Sony - 323K
6. Mario Kart Wii with wheel - Nintendo - 263K
7. Call of Duty: World at War - Xbox 360 - Activision - 193K
8. Mario Kart DS - Nintendo - 145K
9. New Super Mario Bros. - Nintendo - 144K
10. Guitar Hero World Tour - Wii - Activision - 136K

Wii play is still on the list! 360 dominates software again, guess it's because PS3 owners only use it as a Blu-ray player. The 360 is for hardcore gamers - not that softcore gamer crap the Wii has. SKU. Price point.

Hmmm I don't think everyone's a winner there.

Expected more from KZ2. We all know game sales are frontloaded. I don't even think it will match that number in March.

That PS3 number is once again fail.

Awesome news for SF4 hopefully it ends up selling a lot more. PS3 number being so close to 360 is good for a change. I think that is the closest a x-platform title on the PS3 has gotten to 360 sales.

MS just announced Halo Wars surpasses 1 mil in sales but it wasn't released until this month.

No Star Ocean on there makes me sad but I didn't expect it either.

I assume it uses the D-pad heavily? I love the 360 controller, but I don't think I could use it to play a game that uses the D-pad for anything more than minor functionality.

VF5 holds the honor of having the PS3 version outsell the (superior) 360 version. To be fair, it wasn't a simultaneous release.

I think anyone who had a choice bought SF4 for the PS3 - the 360's d-pad is beyond awful. I'm not excusing the 360's performance based on this, it's a pretty good reason.

I'm guessing that's worldwide. KZ2 sold about that much, too.

year over year for the PS3 is a negative. In Feb 08 they sold 280,000 consoles.
They need a price cut or I expect more year over year sales decreases. What is this the 4th month in a row the PS3 has posted year over year sales declines?

Right, I said essentially even. The decline in the number of units sold was really small.

Sony is fighting off a price cut hard while publishers and the consumers keep pushing for one hard. Sony's goal is to try and get profitable again which a price cut won't help. They are thinking that their lineup of games will help them push the PS3 at the current price.

It was leaked recently that Target and another store are getting new PS3 bundles. I think Target is getting MotoStorm and Resistance and it's going to be priced at $399. This comes out immediately after GDC so a price cut anytime soon isn't looking good.

These bundles don't mean much to the consumer. Just lower the damn price already.

And as if to prove my point....link

"I think it's already well publicized that we have a very clear objective from our parent, Sony Corp., that we're to focus on a profit objective, and with those marching orders it limits the playbook when it comes to pricing and promotion. Our competition had a very aggressive pricing strategy, but they also were packing two, three, four games in with the unit weekend to weekend with different retailers, and that cost a lot of money. So we had a profit goal and they had a market share goal. We've had a very successful year; we had record revenues across our three platforms last year, and our PS3 business was up 40 percent, notwithstanding the tough climate. So we've really focused on changing the conversation away from price and trying to communicate the value inherent in the PS3."

I know some people claim it is silly to think people would buy a PS3 for backwards compatibility but I think it is true.

I would buy one if it upscaled nicely.

PS2 sold 130K this month, I'd guess at least some of those people would buy a PS3 instead if it still offered BC. It certainly would make the PS3 easier to recommend to people wanting to play (J)RPGs

The hardware BC on my launch PS3 does a nice job with in the games I've played like Xenosaga 2 and Ratchet & Clank 2, but it's roughly the same quality as component cables on a real PS2. My Samsung DLP has great built-in upscaling though, the real PS2 probably looks worse on other TVs.

Price drop: Fry's is advertising a free second Dual Shock and 300 movie, target will have Motorstorm + Resisitance 1. It looks like Sony America will be handing out different freebies to different chains as a cheaper alternative to a real price drop.

I bought one of the original 60gb backward compatibles for like $350 with the credit card offer, never complain about that 🙂

Can't recall if it was CNN or WSJ, but one of them were talking about latest sales data. Mentioned while we are in this recession, video games sales were still up 10% with the software part being up 9%, so "those buying the games must not know about the recession".

Some games seem to have aliasing issues when upscaled but others don't. I actually think Okami looks better than it does on the Wii when upscaled to 1080i. It all depends on your TV though. BC is not as critical a feature as it was when there weren't too many exclusive PS3 titles but I still like having three game systems in one. I was lucky to be able to snag one of the 60gb models. There was only one left at the local Best Buy. Never saw them put out any more whenever I was there after that. Got it for $450. Had been going for $550 the week before but they lowered it when the Canadian dollar shot up in 2007.

Fry's has been running ps3 promos for sometime. last week it was dualshock 3 + hancock. before that it was ds3 and dark knight. before that it was usually something cheaper like a vertical stand and some old game.

But if this is sony's plan(select store bundles) maybe they should put something of value for their own stores.
