I was wondering what your monthly gas bill is . Ours is 201.32 a month and were on the budget plan The fact that my m-i-l leaves the stove on all day long cause she is cold probably does not help. but she complains we use to much gas and now wants the wife and I to kick in more cash to pay the bill I would like to know if others here have that high of a payment.

thanks

Is the 201.32 the same each month? are you helping out at all?

What kind of stove is she turning on? kitchen Stove? I would not allow that. It is very dangerous. Get her an electric space heater. or turn the AC down.

Me: 1500 sq ft (2300 if you count the basement which is also heated) home in Nebraska (cold winters). Gas furnace and gas water heater. Electric stove.

[*]Winter gas bill averages $115/month.
[*]Summer gas bill averages $24/month.
[*]Overall average: $60/month.

But, I was recently told that they plan to up their monthly service charge by $7/month, so add $7 to each of those numbers.

Actually I am thinking. If you are on a budget plan through the gas company. This $201 bill might be the result of the catch-up month.

Similar numbers to our house. We have gas furnace, hot water heater, dryer, and oven.

Location plays a huge part in your costs though. Utilities in Michigan are cheap.

For that small of a house, I would think you could do better than that price. Is it an old house with no insulation and lots of holes for outside air to come in?

What kind of rediculous statement is that about the stove? The stove uses gas. Thus it affectst the gas bill. The more you use the stove, the higher the bill. Common sense.

Now, are we talking about a kitchen stove top or a fireplace stove? Either way, both would use gas. But I'm curious.

I honestly don't know but i do know that it is left on all day with the oven door open cause Mother in law is cold In january Bill was 188.40 now bill is 201.32 I think it has to do with the oven being on all day waisting gas. It is an older house but it is warm even in the summer It used to be hotter in this house but we got a new roof last year so it is cooler now without heaters on fishtank sits around 78 degrees thats how warm this house is.

My only use for gas is my stove/oven. When I was on vacation and home using the stove and oven quite a bit (2 hrs a day) my gas bill was roughly 60$. Normally, I use it infrequently (30 minutes every other day) and my bill is 12$

Obviously, our stoves are different etc., but I can see how leaving the stove/oven on for 8hrs per day or so would really add up (probably at least 100$ worth).

78°F in the summer is a good temperature to have. 78°F in the winter is a freaking massive waste of money and our precious natural resources. It should be closer to 68°F in the winter. Tell your MIL to wear a sweater. Buy her some wool clothing for $300 and save your family $1000/year. That is what clothing is for. This is gradeschool 101.

you originally said you were on a budget with the gas compnay. This means thet the 201.32 will be the same every month. Are you using that much gas year round? or did they base that amount on your winter months? Cause you might be able to lower the monthly payment.

Well there's an easy way to test that, how about your in-laws stop turning the gas stove on for one week, see how much lower the next bill is, take the difference x 3 and there's how much that stove uses up. Honestly though, leaving a gas stove on for 8 hours a day, every day for the entire month, I'd easily say that is minimum of $100/month. If your in-laws don't agree to that, well, it's time to move out on your own. And honestly, how the *ell are you married and living with your in-laws? I would go nuts if my wife & I did that.

stupidest thing ever!!!! The gas furnace is designed to warm a house, the stove is not. If she is cold, she needs to raise the thermostat for the furnace. The furnace should be able to give more heating than the stove, while using 1/10th as much gas to do it.

You're MIL is fraking stupid......

He has budget billing. They average his usage for the whole year, tack on a bit of difference if they expect significant price changes, and then bill that monthly to him. That means, his next price change may be a year away. He'll never be able to do that experiment that you proposed.

Your point is correct, your made up number isn't. A furnace is more efficient than an oven, thus it'll use less gas to heat up the house the same amount. However, if she only needs/wants to have one room hot, then you may be heating rooms that aren't occupied. Heat wasted in those rooms goes out to the cold winter air and is wasted. Thus, it is possible that it'll be cheaper to heat just the kitchen with the oven than to heat the whole house with the furnace. But still, that can't be a safe thing to do.

That is what space heaters are for. Get a space heater with a fan (~$15) and blow the hot air right on to your MIL. She'll be toasty warm without using much electricity even if the house is 60°F.

This can be combined with the wool clothing and/or sweaters.

About $13/month year-round.

Of course, my house has a heat pump and only my range/clothes dryer run off gas. :)

He's on budget. The utility company averages the previous twelve months and bills him for that each month. I forget what mine would be on budget, but it's typically $15-20 in the warmer months and $200-300 in the winter. I use natural gas for heat and water in about a 1200sq ft house.

As for your mother-in-law, buy her a space heater. Using the oven for warming the house (or just one area) is asinine.

i live in michigan so the bills are heavy during winter. We pay about 1000$ for electricity during winter and 300$ during summer time.
