month old charge on debit card (Jackson Hewitt) still hasnt cleared

question: how long can a business wait to charge your debit/credit card before they lose the right?

story: my wife and i had our taxes prepared at jackson hewitt on the 13th of april. we paid with our debit card. it still hasnt cleared our account. anyone know how long they can wait to charge before they lose that money and it becomes mine again?

i should note, they used the old style manual card sliders. why they didnt have the electronic reader like every other store in existance is beyond me. i wouldnt think that would make that long of a difference, but maybe thats why its taking so long.

on a side note, i just got a letter from the irs saying our return was filed wrong. we wouldve missed out on 300 bucks if they hadnt caught it. guess the old irs isnt so bad after all.

no doubt. so much for the we find more of your money slogan they use.

only reason i went there was because the people at hrblock had an attitude both times i called to make an appointment. they were quite rude, actually.

next year ill just do it myself.

H&R Block is hit or miss whether you get a preparer who actually knows what they are doing. I'd be willing to bet that Jackson Hewitt is the same if not worse. BTW-They don't pay their preparers jack. It's like minimum wage + bonus (taxed at a bonus rate) and the hours you are paid for count against your bonus.

If you had been paying attention to the tax thread at the top of ATOT for the past 4 months, you could have saved yourself $$$ and greif.

gee u r the smart....

we had to file things this year that ive never dealt with before, and we were too busy to fool with it.

no grief here. ive no problem paying someone to do it as long as its done right. i wouldve never known they made a mistake if the irs hadnt caught it.

just want to know how long they can hold the authorization for that charge before they lose the right to do so.

I'd go to them and show them the mistake they made... Ask them to have another tax preparer look over your return for you to see if they made any other mistakes, free of charge. If they refuse, simply remind them that word of mouth is going to result in fewer returns for them to fill out next year.

Have you tried calling Jackson Hewitt and asking them what the hold up is?

not yet. ethically, i feel like i should, but the dark side hopes they never charge. would be nice to use that money for some ram.

i may do that. the check should be here in 2 weeks, so i may just chalk it up to lesson learned and leave it at that. not sure if i trust them to look it over again anyway. i plan to do it myself next year.

I think they can hit you whenever they want, unless there is a state statue of limitations on charges. I'm pretty sure there isn't anything federal to stop them. One month though is really not that long of a period in which to charge someone.

Also, I don't want to troll in your thread, but becoming educated about how to file your taxes will save you time, money and grief. I completely understand the convenience of using a preparer, but there is always a risk when handing over a responsibility to someone else.

Also, doesn't J-H have a policy that they will refund you your money if they filed incorrectly?

Next year try to do the taxes yourself and pop into our thread, no limit on the number of questions you can ask 😀 You will learn alot and save yourself a lot of money.

BTW, what did J-H charge you, if you don't mind me asking?
