I took a chance on getting a set of Monsoon speakers yesterday. I brought them home, unpackaged them and they are really cool. It's really too bad that they are the stupidest design on a product that I've come across in a long time.

First of all, these things are very directional. I don't mean sort of directional, I mean VERY directional! If you're out of the sweet spot by an inch, the off axis sound is horrible! It's like throwing a blanket over your speakers. Seriously. To make matters incredibly worse, the speaker brackets are non adjustable, so you have to have the very perfect desk height and seating position. If you have a below the desk keyboard like I do and have your chair adjusted to use it, you are going to be sitting too low for the Monsoon's to be useful. Rediculous!

Why would anyone design a speaker that was this directional for multimedia and why wouldn't they make the stands adjustable if they knew that their speakers were this directional. It's the biggest joke that I've come across.

Even on access, these things sound pretty bad IMO. The sub has no definition whatsoever (one-notey) and the speakers have an annoying upper midrange brightness that may or may not go away when they break in. Of course, this is when I have something wedged under the back of the stands, so the speakers are positioned right at me. ;)

What a joke!

Where? Nobody had any on display. All anybody had was the typical Altec Lansing, CL, BA, etc..

No worries though, because these things are going back for sure.
