Here is something I missed. Monsanto lobbyist, Michael Taylor, will return to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to serve as senior advisor to the commissioner.

Looks like another revolving door kind of guy. I'm not a fan of Monsanto, and their GMO foods and terminator seeds.

Michael R. Taylor, is the former Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto...

Does that mean more corn syrup, corn starch, corn sugars, and corn oil in the butter spread I'm going to put on my corn?

Rofl, really? The FDA is more of a joke than I initially have thought. Oh dear.

I'm also surprised Monsanto is still in business after everything it's done.

Yeah I have very little faith in the FDA these days.

"You're doin' a heckuva job, Mikey!"

Monsanto is a major chemical company. Their interest in food is a small proportion of their body of work. Even if that branch of things was completely closed down, they would barely miss it.

Monsanto has a choke hold on the farming industry. there is no way they are going out of business.

Playing God is a dangerous thing. I love the part where scientists derived pesticides from nerve gas. Golly gee wiz, could it be that's a bad thing for humans too? ( no news there I guess) . I wonder where all this cancer is coming from. Hmmmmm.

Oh, the part where the farmer "stole" the seed from Monsanto and got sued is amazing.

I still don't understand how lobbying is legal. I ask it every time in these threads and it seems nobody really knows, just that's how it is.

Who knows, but it's not secret that cancer rates are through the roof vs a hundred years ago.

Always been my feeling and I have always said it should only be allowed in a town hall setting and if anyone is caught accepting bribe money or anything like that they will be charged with a felony and removed immediately

Every person that writes a letter to their representative is lobbying. Some lobbyists just have more money than others.

So in theory it makes some sense but in practice the greatest visibility of desires appears to be by companies who have professionals spending literally their entire careers in Washington whining and dining politicians.

I'm watching that video. As most documentaries, it's a bit biased. However, at 19:30 when the sued farmer actually reads from the judge's ruling, it's hard not to have sympathy for him. It seems he really got taken to the cleaners on that, poor guy.

Complete fvcked. Monsanto accused this guy of stealing their patented seeds. He says they blewin from a truck driving by or whatever (doesn't know), but ultimately only a small portion of his crop (presimably; video doesn't detail it) was impacted, but the judge ruled that even if your crop is cross polinated by a monsanto plant, that's a breach of the patent, so ultimately you'd be responsible for making sure bees don't go between your crop and a monsanto one!

EDIT: There is of course more online about this case.

They should build a special prison called the Revolving Door Federal Prison. In it, we will put the minions of the Fed, Goldman Sachs, Treasury Dept, lobbyists, etc. They will be allowed to eat what they can farm themselves on the prison grounds. Of course, we will be humane and provide them the very best of GMO grains that Monsanto offers.....:D

Just to play a bit of devil's advocate here, there are not tons and tons of experts in these somewhat esoteric fields. As such you can not help but avoid having people who float from academia, to private industry, to government, and back to a previous job.

Honestly this is ignorance on your part in understanding the chemistry. Most commonly used organo-phosphate pesticides are what are called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, which are a neurotoxins. Due to that entire evolution thing, just about all animals use the same neurotransmitter as such of course that pesticide is going to interact with the chemical pathway in just about the same manner regardless of the species.

Then you get into the entire concept of dose levels. Humans are going to have a different dosage requirement than a grasshopper.
