im a total networking noob and am trying my damndest to get this monowal box running as a router.

heres a link to their site. http://m0n0.ch/wall/

ive gotten it to boot and ive set the ports but now its asking for a lan IP address (dont know what to put there) i just put the same IP as its default then moved on but im not sure thats right.

then it asks for a subnet bit count. and i can choose from 24, 16, or 8. i duno what to put

then it asks to enable DHCP and i say yes (i think this scans the IP range i specify next and sees if any of them are the IP of the comp i have hooked to the box)

then it asks for start and end addresses of client address range. do i enter my comps IP here?like set it to ((start scan<my comp IP<end scan))

then it asks to "ping host" is this the IP of my isp? neone know what to do when im on a school network?

sorry this is alot of questions but ive been worken at this for a while and its frusterating not knowing any of this.

whats the default for lan ip? 192.168.0.1?? if so make the subnet bit count 24
> Subnet mask examples:
> 255.0.0.0 = /8 <-if 10.0.0.0 network
> 255.255.0.0 = /16 <-if 172. i cant remember, sad since im CCNA certified.
> 255.255.255.0 = /24 <-192.168.0.0 network

do you want your monowal box to give out ips?if you do then enable DHCP for the start and end addresses, this is the range your firewall will give out ips in. like for example, if you connect a pc and it needs an address, if the range is
192.168.0.100->192.168.0.150 it will give up to 50 pcs an ip, and they will be in the range, so one will be 192.168.0.101 for example.

im thinking the ping host will mean your WAN side, like this box has a lAN side which connects to your pc right? and a WAN side that connects to another router, or perhaps a network? or perhaps to a cable/dsl modem? this should be the host, if you know the ip, try to ping that, i think i am right on this. my ccna expires this june anyway so i need to review. let me know the wording the monowal is saying, also, did you consult the FAQs on that website you linked?

thanks for the quick reply

the default lan ip is 192.168.1.1

i dont know what cha mean about "give out IPs" are you asking if i want the monowal box to assign the IPs to the comps connected to it over the lan port? this would be fine but dose this need to be set for a range that my current IP (only one comp will be connected at firlst) is in?

ya i got 2 eithernet cards and set one as the WAN and one as the LAN.

ill try to findout the host's IP

the FAQs only deal with once you get the initial setup down. there for configuring the thing.

ya i took a quick look at their faqs before replying, they dont get you up at first, im sure its there somewhere..

the range does not need to be set for a range that your current ip is in, i would have no pc connected to your lan with an ip at this time. once you have the range set, then connect the pcs and let them get ips.
