My family and I just left WDW yesterday...... I mean we rode in the front of one of those monorails on Thursday..

:(

The Driver was showing us how the thing works, including how they know when another train is ahead of them.......

The max speed on those things is only 40-45mph. The driver also said that generally the newer interns take the nightshift. He'd been driving nights for a year and had finally moved to driving in the day.

2 AM? Aren't all the parks closed by that time, even on the 4th of July weekend?

I wonder who's faults its going to be. Is there some place that monitors all the trains locations so that this cant happen? Maybe that person fell a sleep or was texting or something.

It takes about 2 hours to empty out the Magic Kingdom after a day like the 4th.

You are talking about moving 50,000 people out of the park and across the lake to the parking lot.

i would think more along the lines of a seizure or major mechanical failure.

The trains are so far apart that it would be hard to hit the one in front of you while texting.

Plus it happened at one of the stations so the train should have been slowing down as it approached the station.

BTW the guy was squashed big time. He was driving the blue train that is under the other train meaning the nose of the other train would have been in his lap.

Sad :(

the monorails require the driver to constantly push a button to move the train.

reports are that the system that regulates spacing between trains was temporarily overriden in order to back the train into the station.

Even if that report was true the driver would have to be asleep to not notice a train in the station and hit it with enough force to cause the damage seen in the photos.

there is no way for the driver to be incapacotated. They have a deadman's switch.

Hard to say what happened, but it is not possible that he was asleep or unconscious or away from the cockpit.

Maybe his finger got stuck in the button. Maybe there was a short in the switch that wouldn't break the circuit when the button was released. There are a billion possibilities. Lets wait and find out.
