I had mono this past January. I had to take the semester off from college. I was told by my doctor that i could have died if i didn't go to the ER.

I had this increasing pain on my left side. I couldn't lie on my back, basicallly i could only sit up right. So, i walked my self to the hospital ( At my college, i'm like a 5 min walk to the ER) around midnight. After a CT scan and some blood test it was concluded that I was bleeding internally from a ruptured spleen. I was bleeding into my spleenic sac. At least i think that's how they described it to me. My spleen was really frickin huge, 8-10x its normal size.

Suffice to say, when i went into the ER, i stopped eating food for almost a week and a half prior.

The cute Trauma surgeon told me that I lost 2.5 litres of blood. I looked like sh!t, but the Student Nurses at the hospital were really cute ( i had a 5 day stay). I ended with a 7 or so inch long scar on my chest. The incision was held together by 27 staples.

SO, mono sucks, but it can also kill.

Wrong. I got it from sitting next to someone in one of my classes, a foot or two away. Unless you're suggesting he spit in my mouth...(wtf?) then you're wrong.

Who knows, it's a possiblity, but I seriously doubt it happened anything like that.

Considering symptoms takes anywehre from 30-50 days to present, how do you know who gave it to you? EBV is spread through direct contact. Fluids wiped onto hands, shared drinks, sex, coughs that expel saliva, etc. But, you're not going to get it just sitting next to someone.

I hadn't had oral contact with anyone in that period of time. This person I was sitting next to had mono.

It has a much higer infection rate that way, but like stated before, you can get it from just being in close contact.

When I was in school, almost all the cheerleaders got it because one of them got around a lot (confirming to new name calling rules for females) and several of them was drinking from her water bottle and bam.......like 75% came down with it.

Maybe they were all making out after practice?
