Monitors: 19inch and Up

I have a 17inch Flat screen monitor, and i wanted to upgrade to a good monitor that could do 1600x1200 at a good refresh rate(mine cant even do it).

I first started looking at the 21+ inch category. I foudn very FEW monitors that could do it. And if they could the price was outrageous.

So i thought, well I would have to settle with a 19 that could do it decent.

So i started looking up info on some 19inchers and found that there was a couple that could do 1600x1200 at almost 100Hz, and most all of them could do it at 85Hz.

Edit: 3) Hitachi P910+
This is a 19inch DynaFlat screen that does 1600x1200 at 85Hz, only weighs 40pounds, the others weigh 55, has a dot pitch of .20 and is only 173$$ ANYONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT THIS MONITOR, they are from MonitorsDirect Jim!

Edit: 4)Hitachi Q910 This monitor claims to be PerfectFlat, has a .20 dot pitch, higher horizontal scan than the previous, weighs considerably less (44 LBS). and does 16x12 at 85Hz!!! SOMEONE lET ME KNOW ABOUT THESE 2 NEW MONITORS FAST!!!!!!!1

1)The Viewsonic p95f, almost hits 100, but it has a dot pitch of .25 to .27

2)Another monitor, displays 1600x1200 at a dot pitch of constand .24

Anyone with good monitor knowledge, i need your opinion.

I do alot of graphics and web and rendering work.

So of the 2 monitors above, both being flat screen, which one would give me the better picture? hopefully this can aid other people as well, feel free to discuss other monitors and settings.

check out the samsung 900nf very very nice monitor

i have the 700nf(17") and it can do 1280x1024 @ 150

and like 16x12 @85 which is more than u can see normally

There are plenty of 21"+ tubes that'll do 1600@85Hz and many will do it at 95Hz+. Use the search function and Google.

geez..you gotta get a 21" monitor for what you do-
once you've used a 21" monitor, you'll never go back.

Speaking of monitors, I just saw a review on a Hansol 19" Monitor. Anyone ever actually seen or used on of these things? For the price, it seems like a good deal - if it actually works the way the review said it does.

I just got a 21" sony trinit (p1110) from them for my pop .. got myself a P991 19" sony trini .. both flat and both do the res that you want. Superwicked deals there .. go dual.
I'm hopefully gonna hook up my other p990 (not flat but sony trini too) and do the dual thing .. once I find a place locally that has a pci 7500 in stock.

Also running a 19inch Dell P991 and a Gateway 17inch Gateway EV700 in a dual monitor setup ( GF4 )

I do not do any type of image or video editing but I still find dual monitors handy... :)

My Sony F500 supposedly can do 1600x1200 at 97Hz. Windows 2000 only gives me the option up to 85Hz though and Sony only has INF files for this monitor available for 95 and 98. It hasn't mattered to me, otherwise I would look harder though. I generally run at 85Hz even if higher is supported.

I have a Viewsonic P810, and it isn't even in the same category as my Sony F500 (But the price was right -- gift from Grandpa). That isn't a fair comparison, the two monitors were manufactured about the same time, but the Sony went for about $500 more.

The Viewsonic P225f can do 1600x1200 at 99Hz. A lot of people like the way Viewsonics look. I've never been impressed. Seems to be going for about $650.

I think the Samsung Flat monitors give the Sony's a good run as far as appearance and quality goes, but for a much cheaper price. The SyncMaster 957MB 19" at 1600x1200 maxes out at 76Hz. The Samsung 21" 1100P and 1100P+ are flat square, wouldn't recommend Flat square for a new monitor. The Samsung SyncMaster 1200NF does appear to be a 22" flat monitor (About $600), recommended resolution is 1600x1200 at 85Hz. That one seems to use a Mitsubishi tube though and I'm not a big fan of Mitsubishi.

I take it you don't have a local store where you can compare the two yourself? I am also not a big fan of mail/online ordering for monitors. They have a high probability of sustaining damage.

If I am spending a decent amount of money on a monitor I like to look at it before I purchase it. In particular, one thing that has not been discussed is the colors produced by a monitor. If you can go into a store and play with the settings and see which one you can get to your tastes, I think that will make a big difference with how satisfied you are in the end.

How do you think monitors get to the local shops...by magic? :)

Local shops often carry only el-cheapo monitors and rarely anything over 19". If you can find something good there by all means go for it.

I bought a Samsung 900 sight unseen because it was the last component for my new system and I was frickin sick of shopping for parts :) I am very happy with it.

No. I haven't worked at a computer store so I don't know how many monitors arrive at their stores with beat up boxes. I just have seen a bunch of monitors get damaged in shipping when sent to individuals or companies.

I live in the bay area, so I have no problem finding any mainstream monitor where I can play with it. The nationwide chain stores around here have monitors on display, I assume that the same stores in some other markets would have similar display. I realize even large chains change their displays and product selection from market to market, but I would think that they wouldn't think that the difference is vast.

I have bought all my monitors locally, I guess my Sony F500 is an el-cheapo smaller than 19" monitor :) Most of the stores I've gone into looking at monitors don't carry anything smaller than 17" in CRTs (LCDs they carry smaller), and have a good selection of 21 and 22" monitors. I guess that is the advantage of living in Silicon Valley.

The Sony CPD-G420 is one of the best 19" monitors you can buy. It does 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz and it has a 0.24 dot pitch.

You first need to decide ultra flat trinitron or a little curved shadow mask.

then it gets easier


I wanted a 21" but the deskspace to support it is crazy. I settled on a shadow mask 19"...nice...only 16x12@75hz but I like it.

Once LCD's get dialed in I will upgrade. Same with my 32" tv. I am not happy with LCD/Plasma performance, longivity, or pricing to lay out the cash yet.
