Monitoring Tools?

Just wondering what everyone used to monitor their network in an enterprise environment? I'm looking for something that I can display on a website or application and put up on a few different monitors.

We currently have Solarwinds Orion, which is great, but I was just seeing what everyone else uses.

Solarwinds Orion is a great product...i pitched it a while back but the pricing led us else where, too rigid. some other packages ive used:

- HP Openview
- Level Platforms
- Zenoss Core / Enterprise
- IPSwitch WhatsUp

im currently testing Zenoss with very mixed feelings. if you have the time, resources, and knowledge its great...if you need something that just works, its not for you.

MRTG. It's free and does a nice job of tracking traffic. It's open source and there are ways to track just about anything.

Have used Big Brother, not entirely pleased with it. Currently looking into What's Up and SolarWinds ipMonitor. Will look at Orion (and the other modules) if budget permits, and if some of its functionality isn't put into the other 2 applications.

I've used IP Switch's What's UP, MRTG, and HP Openview.

MRTG is great if your environment is somewhat static - once you set up the MIB's and you're done.

Whats UP is nice for SMB environments.
It doesn't scale well...at least in my experience.

I didn't personally configure our HP OV, so can't really speak for it, but from what I know, you need a ton of resources (staff & hardware) to use it efficiently.

We're looking into Orion.
If anyone else also have good experience w/ it please speak up.

I went to StatSeeker's booth in this year's Networkers.
The sales guy's British accent was interesting, so was their pricing model - one price for your entire network, no matter how big it is.
It sounds like it's geared toward really large enterprises.
I know FedEx uses it.

We use SolarWinds Orion NPM for around around 3 years now and we are extremely happy with it. I also have the Netflow and Application Performance Monitor modules and I also use the Cirrus software from SolarWinds to Manage our network gear.

We monitor over 5000 elements and almost 1000 nodes with this software. I have the SLX version so we have unlimited elements that we can monitor.

Personally I think it is great and using custom MIB's I can gather in-depth statistics on servers like Processor queue length and Disk queue length etc. On switches I can even monitor temperature and all the way down to the port level for traffic data. It also keeps track of historical data so you can go back and look over the data.

Using Netflow I can track individual conversations across the network and who is using the bandwidth.

HP OpenView, which I have mixed feelings about. It does its job, but isn't much fun to deploy initially.

Currently using nagios and Cacti on unix platforms - both of which I like very much.

Cool! A fellow Orion user... looks like you have a lot of equipment you're monitoring. We only have the SL2000 license.

What is your server setup like? One server for the Orion software and one for the backend SQL? Also, what are the server specs?

I was just receiving everything and we are at 6000 element with 1869 Nodes being monitored.

The Server is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 4GB of RAM and 2 Quad Core 2.66Ghz CPU running W2k3 Server SP2. The DataBase portion sits on of of our SQL clusters. Most of the time the Server doesn't exceed 20% CPU utilization.

The Server also monitors pieces of equipment on several non-routed networks. So I have the server setup with 2 NIC setup with adaptive fault tolerance between both our Core 6500 switches to reach all of our main routed networks. I then have 2 more NIC's that have trunking enabled that only pass the non-routed VLAN's so the server reaches all the non-routed networks out the trunked NIC's. These trunked NICs are also setup between both core 6500 switches with adaptive fault tolerance enabled.
