Monitoring online/offline status

Howdy,

Can anyone recommend a free program that can be used to monitor PCs and jsut report if they go offline? I have 2500 or so remote XP machines that I need to know about when they go offline. I have a list of PC names and also have the IP addresses, but I need something to monitor it.

I'd like something as close to real time as possible but if it's something that goes every 5 minutes or 15 minutes or whatever, I'll take whatever I can get.

I don't need any specs of the machine or anything else, I just need to know if something goes offline so I can look into it.

Thanks.

Oh, this would be something I'd like to run from my own XP machine. It could run as a service or whatever but I don't have a server to install anything on 🙁

Honestly, something that simple would be fine, if it were multi threaded. I'm running FreePing but it's only checking one host per second. With 2500 hosts, that's going to take almost 45 minutes to check them all.

Is there anything similar that might be able to fire off multiple pings at the same time to run through the list faster?
Oh, and I'd want something that can automatically put all the "down" machines at the top of the list. FreePing lets me sort but it doesn't update unless I tell it to sort again.

Your best bet is google...that's how I found FreePING. I use nagios, if this is a business/money making application...might be worthwhile to set that up.
