Monitoring LAN - Bandwidth usage

Is there a cheaper way of monitoring local network usage ? Some guy was telling me he's got a program that can see which user or IP is using a lot of bandwidth, ie when he's coping a file off the network or something...

any ideas or suggestion ?
 
Are you wanting to tap the LAN and find out which pc (IP) is utilizing the majority of the bandwidth? There are several packages out there to do that but most are enterprise network monitoring programs that are $$$$.
 
I'm used to sniffer and RMON probes. I'm curious about a cheap or freeware stuff too.

Are you on a switched network? if so then you'll run into difficulty "seeing" of PCs traffic. Are you just interested in internet traffice with a home network? If so then you could stick some kind of monitor between the internet connection and the home network.

 
There are tools (handheld devices) that will monitor switched networks. You have to plug them into the segment that you want to analyze (server/router/etc). I'm poor and have never used them. But this stuff does exist.
 
or you can always install SNMP service on your client and monitor it with mrtg.
