Monitoring fan RPM without using MB power connector?

I have an Delta fan (loud as f*** BTW) which draws somewhere around 4 watts. It has a 3 pin connector, which leads me to believe that it is capable of RPM monitoring. However, I don't really want to put a 4watt load on my motherboard fan connectors (I have an Abit BE6-II). I was wondering if there was any way to rewire the fan as to draw power from the standard HD 4 pin connector while still getting RPM monitoring from the MB.

BTW, finger and Delta = bad. I learned the hard way.

Apparently you are using an adapter setup to plug in to the psu connector. If you have soldering skills, splice the fan +12v and ground to the psu connector plug on the adapter, and leave the other (sensor) wire on the fan mobo plug. This would be the fan wire that has no counterpart in the adapter.

You will get power and ground from the psu plug, and sensor output to the mobo. Don't leave any untidy uninsulated ends or splices, and leave some wire length between your splices and the plugs, in case you want to change it back.

I only needed to connect the yellow wire from my Sunons and Panaflos to my bx6-r2. I don't think you need or want to connect the ground wire to the mobo. If this is wrong plaese someone tell me otherwise. Everything has been working great so far.

Thanks, I can solder decently (enough for Promise mod and occassional printed PCBs) so Ill give it a shot. I think you guys are saying the same thing. Connect red/black wires to drive power adaptor and other color one to monitoring pin on MB header (where the odd colored wire should plug into directly if I didn't use adaptor). Sound right?

just remember that on a molex 4 pin connector, Black is ground, Red is +5V, and Yellow is +12V

Thanks guys - I got it to work. 7000RPM, no wonder why my finger got ripped up.
