Monitor won't sleep using HDMI input when computer turned off

I have a Samsung SyncMaster T240 monitor that won't sleep when using the HDMI input, if the HDMI cord is plugged into a computer that is powered off. I tried this using a reference MSI 5850 and an HP laptop that had an HDMI port.

As a work around, I used a $2 HDMI-DVI adapter (using same HDMI port on the monitor). So even with the very same HDMI cable connected to the monitor, for some reason, the monitor will sleep so long as the adapter is connected.

Any idea why this would be, and why the presence of the adapter would fix it?

I hope someone else might find this useful if they are frustrated with HDMI on this monitor.

Try a different HDMI cable... some HDMI cables are missing ceartin chipsets or not HDCP compliant to communicate to your monitor to go to sleep...
