Monitor won't go to sleep when using a DVI to VGA adaptor

Ok, I figured the first time this happened it was a freak occurence but now I've got two systems doing it.

On two of my systems I am using video cards that have only DVI outputs, with monitors that have only DSUB inputs. I had a few converters laying around in the parts drawer that had come with various video cards so I hooked them up with that. No real problems with usage - they boot up and run fine, but neither of them go to sleep. The screen will go black but the monitor itself remains fully "awake" constantly.

Everything seems to be different on these systems. One is an old 17" CRT with a TNT2 video card running Windows 2k, and the other is an LCD hooked with a Geforce 9600GT video card running Ubuntu 9.10.

Does the power saving functions simply not work over the adaptors or am I missing something?

Thanks.
