Monitor upgrade

I currently have a Samsung 2693HM (25.5" TN LCD from 2008) that has worked fine for gaming and work. But, its old, huge and gives off a lot of heat. I'm wondering if a new IPS (dell u2312hm) would be a much better experience? I'm starting a job where i work from home for one week each month, and I'm looking to upgrade my old ass chair, desk etc... and monitor comes to mind.

The main issue is going to 1080 from 1200, but I think I'd prefer that for games and could get used to it for work. I just can't tell if I won't notice any big difference other than a smaller, lower resolution screen that I paid 150 bucks for when I already had what appears to be a decent monitor. Games are online Dota and Sc2 and usually the single player of whatever big graphic FPS that comes out (Crysis 3, FC3 etc).

What kind of work will you do?

Also, what OS do you have? And would you be interested in putting your old monitor side-by-side with a new one?

Its IT work, server patching, server support. Windows 8 (ugh) and I could put the monitors next to each other for comparison sure, but they couldnt stay that way. I can barely fit the 19" on my desk with the 25.5. Two 23's might work, but I'd prob just stick with 23 + 19.

I'm thinking one of the 21:9 25x10 monitors might be a good choice to save space and give me decent options (could always scale games to 16:9) but ~400 just seems too steep. Also dealing with the unique resolution could be a pain.

I personally would never downgrade to a screen with less square inches. Even if it was better in every respect. If you are changing aspect ratios then its a bit more complicated to calculate the difference in sq inches. But you should do the calculations. I bought my gf a Dell 27" IPS 2560x1440, and I really dont think she fully appreciates how great a screen it is. To be honest I myself can barely tell the difference between it and the 23" 1680x1050 screen it replaced. She actually complains because "everything is smaller". I try to explain that smaller is a good thing but you know how women are... One thing for sure is I would not trade my $300 40" TN panel for that Dell 27" Ultrasharp IPS 2560x1440. No way.

Yeah I hear ya on the screen size deal. I definitely wouldn't mind going up in ppi though. Those 21:9 monitors seem to be a really dividing issue with people. If only I could go check one out in person somewhere...

Well, real servers run some variant of Unix or Linux, so all you really need is a VT100 emulator. 😉

But seriously, if it were me, I'd try to stick with at least 1920x1200. Downgrading resolution sucks. Newegg has the ASUS VS24AH-P for $240, which is IPS and 1920x1200. The stand isn't as nice as the Ultrasharp, but it does at least have VESA mount point in cast you want to get a fancy stand or arm.
