monitor upgrade on a budget

What's the best CRT monitor I could get with a small budget of no more than $250 that will be a decent upgrade from this: Dell M991. Preferably it would have a flat screen rather than curved. I really have no knowledge on monitors at all but the one I am on now seems like a piece of junk, not to mention it's giving me headaches (literally).

so whats the difference between a flat panel crt and an lcd? Also, what are some of the specifications to look for in a good monitor?

A typical CRT monitor has a screen that is slightly curved. A flat CRT (I sometimes see it refered to as a perfectly flat screen - that may be a marketing thing from some company though) has a screen that is flat. An LCD or flat panel monitor has a screen that is flat, as well as being substantially thinner than a CRT monitor (only a couple inches thick as opposed to over a foot). They use entirely different technology to display the image - cathode ray tube vs. liquid crystal display.

ok thats what I thought, thanks for clariying kaylya. I'm not looking for an LCD at the moment due to budget constraints, just something that will serve me better than this crummy typical CRT. Judging by the anandtech.com guides, the 955DF is my best choice, considering I can pick it up 5 minutes from my house for 200 USD with a 3 year warranty. Is there anything better near that price that anyone can suggest?

That monitor you linked seems like a decent unit. Does 1600x1200 at 75hz and 1280x1024 @ 85hz which is lot higher than that Samsung 955DF. Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. Seems like more of a downgrade to me.

What resolution and refresh rate are you running that Dell monitor? The headache could come from too low of refresh rate. I would recommend running that monitor at 1280x1024 @ 85 hz or 1024x768 @ 85hz.

That would explain your headache. 60hz would give most people headache. Raise it to 75hz which is the max for that monitor at 1600x1200. Better yet, give up some real estate and drop down to 1280x1024 @ 85hz and that should help out your eyes even more.

changed to 1280x 1024 @ 85hz, thanks for the tip, saved me from wasting $200...🙂 Of course, If I had a little more common sense and actually compared the two descriptions I probably wouldn't have had to make this thread. Oh well, I love this board.
