Monitor too bright even at min levels

Hi, i have a HP 2309m monitor. even after i reduce its brightness to a minimum from the monitor controls, its brightness is way too much to use at night in complete darkness. due to this, i am experiencing pain in my eyes. i know its not the ideal conditions to use a monitor in but still,if you can tell me a way to reduce even further to acceptable levels, it would be great.
Earlier i had a LG CRT monitor and i could use it smoothly during the night as i could reduce its brightness to amazingly low levels.

P.S. I tried fidgeting with the other controls(contrast n all) as well but to no avail.

Thank you.

While it's not the answer you want, you really shouldn't be using it in total darkness. Get a cheap lamp with a non-ventilated reflector, that takes normal bulbs, and either put it behind your monitor, pointing at the wall, or somewhere else (but not where it will cause glare), pointed at the ceiling.

As to a monitor, I'd wager that very few LCD monitors will go dark enough for what you want. Many CRTs wouldn't, either, for that matter.

You can use your video card driver's color settings to reduce the brightness further.

It is the lack of ambient light that is making it so hard on your eyes though so a small lamp like Cerb suggested would help a lot too. Some of those privacy filters dim the screen a bit too or you can try to find some tinted plastic sheet to tape on it or wear sunglasses 🙂

Whats the big deal about using a monitor in the dark? Or maybe you were talking about the OP directly, which would make sense.

As for brightness try messing around in drivers. Nvidia stock drivers should do it, and I'm guessing the CCC can as well, but if it doesn't I know for a fact ATT does. I can turn my 2233RZ to basically off with this.

Use your ATI, Nvidia, or Intel monitor settings. You can get that monitor down to drab and dark in no time.

Thank you both for the tip. I reduced brightness and contrast through the ATI CCC(thanks NoQuater). I will look into setting up some sort of ambient light in my room.

Edit: There were two more posts after i typed in ^ message. Guys i got the Brightness levels down to comfortable levels. Thanks a lot for your input.

Thank You.

Eye strain, mostly. In addition, it only takes a little bit if light in your periphery to make the monitor not look so bright. Just a little bit, and your eyes will adjust to it.

Neat cite, bad pun.
