Monitor to Xbox 360. Need cabling advice for sound.

I'd like to have my Monitor work with my Xbox 360, the video works. The sound doesn't.

Here's my setup:

Monitor Connections:
-HDMI Audio Output.
-HDMI Jack
-Con (Yellow port)
-S-Video Port
-Red/Blue/Green Ports.

Xbox 360 Cables:
There are 6 cables. A par of three are coupled together.
--Red/Yellow/White and Red/Blue/Green.
--This system was bought the week 360's were released. So there's no HDMI cabling.

Speaker System:
Logitech z5500 5.1 Surround Sound

Sound Card:
-XFi-Elite Pro
--Contains one free input 3.5mm jack.

Whats connected:
-Monitor's (Red/Blue/Green) Ports connected with the Xbox's (Red/Blue/Green) cables, the -Xbox's Red/Yellow/White are not connected into anything.

Whats the problem:
No sound. Video looks alright I suppose. Wish I had 1080p (Which this monitor supports) 🙁

Questions:
1-Is there a way to do this without adapters/extra cables? Like a way to transmit the signal (Xbox => Monitor => PC)?
2-Monitor/PC not near Xbox. Do I need to split my Xbox cabling?
3-Do I need a adapter to plug the Xbox's audio cables into my Soundcards input 3.5mm (headphone) jack?
4-Is there a way to get an HDMI cable for my Xbox 360? Or do I need an entire new system for that?

I would also like to have my Cable Box plugged into my Monitor in the near future as well. Would I need to spend upwards $70-100 for some sort of switch that would allow me to switch between the processes? If so, I'll put this off and by a cheap part/adapter/cable or whatever I need to purchase based on your recommendation(s).

S-Video is just that -- Video.
Blue, Read, and Green are not HDTV cables. They are called component video cables (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_video). They do have more resolution than composite cables (Yellow, Red, White), but they are not HDTV.

Currently the HDTV standard is an HDMI cable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI).

For audio, if you dont have speakers, you will obviously need to buy them before you get sound. Once you get sound, you can use regular composite cables to transmit the audio.

Depending on the out puts you have out of your 360, the best combination is an HDMI cable to your monitor for video, and an optical cable to your sound system for 5.1 audio.

www.monoprice.com is a great place to purchase cables at very low cost.

I'm still a little confused. Do I need something like this: Link1 or like this at all? Link2
(those cables are white/red, is there anything for component?)
Will that fix it? Do they make anything that is a little more reliable? I'm also wondering if I'll have to find a way to split the cabling with my Xbox 360 since the system isn't right next to my monitor or my PC.

Any information appreciated.
Also as a side question: Do I need a newer Xbox 360 to be able to get HDMI? Or do they sell any kind of "add-on" I could purchase? It'd be nice considering my monitor has HDMI inputs.

Ok, since integramodder is full of crap, let's set this record straight: red/blue/green connectors are component. Component is a high definition analog video input. It allows for resolution up to 1080p (if your monitor supports it, if not... 1080i, which is pretty good) So you don't need to screw around with any sort of HDMI tomfoolery.

For sound, your speakers are 5.1 which means if you want to use their 5.1 surround sound goodness, you need to get an optical cable. (Also known as toslink) If you have one already with your speakers, plug it into your speakers and then into the base of the Xbox 360 video cable. If you don't have a toslink cable, monoprice is a great place to buy the cables, as integramodder pointed out. Just buy something like this

Hope that helps 😛

Hi Kirby, thanks for the reply.

1. I just located a flap on the base of the XBox 360 cable (next to the switch that flips on TV/HDTV). I'm assuming that this is one of the slots you are talking about.

2. Aha! On the control module there was a nifty button that popped off, showing the face of what looks like to be an Optical port! Considering it says "optical" right above it.

So I just need this cord then? (The one posted in your post Kirby). I'll just have to change the input settings on the LED control tuner so I can hear the audio. So did I find everything okay? That 10 foot cord you suggested Kirby is sounding better and better. So I'll have 1080p on my 1080p monitor and 5.1 sound on my 5.1 system?

FWIW MS sell a cable that plugs into the back of the 360 (at that end, the cable looks just like the one for SCART/SVideo). On the other end the cable splits into a VGA connector and dual 3.5mm jacks*, it comes with a connector to turn them into a single 3.5mm jack. Essentially this is the same solution as Kirby64's except with a VGA connector at the end and the audio splitter in the box. I don't know if VGA or S-Video should give the better picture.

Beware that you cant plug the 3.5mm jack straight into speakers - not my speakers anyway - as it needs to be amplified. I assume speakers with an optical in can do the amplifying though.

*Note the "360 end" of the cable still has the optical connection available, if that's preferable to your setup than the 3.5mm jack.

Oh man...

People like this need to go to mandatory re-education camp and have their brains reprogrammed.

1) Component video is perfectly capable of delivering high definition video up to 1080p with no problem. Good quality RCA cables will give a picture that is indistinguishable from HDMI.

2) "Composite cables" are actually called RCA cables. The yellow jack is a composite video interface, and is the worst way to transmit video to your TV, except for RF modulation, but let's not even go there.

3) The "best" setup for your 360 is component video, and optical audio. Both are standard, and will work perfectly. You will be able to get 1080p out of the 360, no problem.

4) To hook up your cable box in addition to the 360, simply connect it to the HDMI port of your TV. Not sure how many audio inputs your speaker system has, but hopefully it has one other optical or coaxial input that you can use for the cable box.

You've got a lot of cables to deal with now 🙂 They're such a pain. Spend some time on quality cable management and save yourself some stress down the road.

Hehe Misfit. Well it's great then. I've got the component video (the red/blue/green cables) and the toslink cable for optical audio on the way. I've got a sound card I/O console with an Optical In jack that I'll be able to use. Except I've never used the I/O console before and I don't think I have the tiny power cord that connects the soundcard to the motherboard, which essentially gives the I/O console its power supply. I'll probably have to email creative about that.
