hi, i'm looking for suggestions on the absolute best gaming monitor i can buy. i'm looking for a 1600x1200 resolution support. i'll be gaming on the system in my sig if that makes any difference. my price range is almost entirely open ended. i was also considering an lcd tv with pc support. would that be a good idea as well?

I just bought a 24" Sony FW900 Widescreen CRT from Ebay, There were 5 available lastnight but its down to 1 now, Couldnt resist the price being they used to retail for over 2 grand,Ive seen one in person and they have a beautiful picture :) Hopefully nothing is wrong with it.. but he also offers a 30 day warranty.

If you go the LCD route you might check out the Samsung 204T 20" ,Its been getting good reviews and will certainly have better image quality than say a 2001FP (Black levels were very poor on the 2001FP when I had one).

Hopefully... I'm also a Graphic Designer who's been thinking about upgrading for a long time. (my 17" can only display 1280x1024 at 60hz max)

Sorry addinator... I could not pass it up.

You could probably email the seller and ask if you can switch products,I wasnt sure if the HP OEM version was exactly the same internaly (Seems like it) .. Either way the price was really cheap considering its retail cost. I also like the silver color scheme on the Sony version, it looks just like my current 21" CRT.

There is a guy selling the F520 as well, although given the prices the FW900 might be a better deal.

Those HP FW900s are probably exactly the same apart from the beige color and are actually very common on ebay. There were some Sun, SGI and Dell branded monitors where I used to work that were completely identical to the Sony Trinitrons, even having the same product codes, except for the color.

Oh man look at the image on LCD screen really shyt, Anyway Sun fw9010, SGI fw9011 and HP fw9012 all have the same component as sony fw900 except Sun, they got rid of the BNC5 and replace it with their propriety cable 13w3 and yes i have i *new* sony fw900 and sun fw9010. to be honest i prefer sun's goldy theme than sony's silvery but they are still better than HP's beige and SGI's black.

lol well actualy my camera settings made it look a lot worse than it does in person, however the black levels ARE very poor on the LCD in person,it makes games like Doom / Thief / Splinter Cell / FEAR etc. look really bad, especially with the CRT sitting next to it as a refrence. These closeup shots are more accurate but still not perfect:

Sony 21" CRT closeup.

Dell 2001FP LCD closeup.

Brighter games like Farcry look great on the LCD but they still perform better on the CRT due to lack of motion blur and framerates just feeling smoother. Plus im able to run games with Vsync at a higher framerate on the CRT due to higher refresh settings, The LCD is limited to 60Hz/60FPS w/ Vsync.

Took this shot off the CRT (Farcry running @ 2048x1536 res) it doesnt do it justice vs. seeing it in person but it came out decent.

You wouldnt happen to have a digicam? I wouldnt mind seeing some FW900 widescreen action :D I wont get mine until sometime next week.

I dont have one but my housemate actually does but he is asleep now (already pass midnight in the UK) and i dont want to go through his stuff without permission. i'll see what i can do tomorrow.

There is another thing dont expect very high resolution ingame cam shot because my main rig is broke (2cpu forum). it has 2 opteron 244, tyan s2875, 1G RAM, and agp 6800U. At the moment im using old rig 2 pIII 733, OR840, 512MB, Ti 4200. I could swap the graphic card to boost this rig a lill' bit. And at the moment im building another rig and the only components im waiting are extra hdd and a pair of xfx 7800gtx

2 x opteron 252
4 x 512 MB reg-ecc corsair pc3200
tyan k8we s2895 with scsi
73gb raptor (from broken rig) but 2 73GB scsi fujitsu are coming
the rests are not very significant :)

anyway check my current screenshot

I am agreeing with everything JRW has to say. I also own both LCD and CRT, and games like DOOM 3 look better on the CRT. Games like Far Cry would look better on my LCD, but I get to much motion blur.
