While just normally being on the computer, my monitor will suddenly shut off. Not playing games or anything like that, just normal surfing or whatever.

Viewsonic P90f
Gainward GeForce Ti 4200 AGP8X
ASUS A7N8X - E Deluxe
XP Pro

Here are some details I see when it happens :

The computer stays on and doesn't shut down.

The "viewmeter" screen comes up with these details :

FH +00.4khz

FV +19.4khz

Status Over

I have to do a restart before it will work again, and when I check the status after restart, it says this :

1024 x 768

FH +68.6khz

FV +84.9khz

Status : OK

Any ideas at all ???

It sound like your signal to your monitor is getting interrupted in some way.

A couple of thoughts:

1. Check for a loose cable connection. Sounds obvious, but you never know.
2. Update driver for the vid card.
3. Switch out current vid with a different one. It might not be your monitor; it's quite possible it's your vid card going bad. Also, you should try a different monitor and see if similar things happen with the new monitor. If you get the same problem with the different monitor, you know that your first monitor is not the problem.

Remember when ever you trouble shoot to change just one thing at a time. It makes it easier to isolate exactly which part is failing.

movieman:

I have that very same problem, with a Viewsonic E70f (I know, crappy monitor). It has happened less often now that I have fixed a heat issue with my computer. Two areas seemingly unrelated.

hmmmm...The cable going to the videocard was a bit loose, as a friend was checking another system on my monitor and didn't get the screws set completely.

BUT, I am still experiencing the same sudden shutdown --- Think it could be the card ? I don't have an extra here to try ??? I reboot and everything comes back as normal...
