monitor shielding

the upper left corner of my second monitor has been shaking sporadically. I deduced it was the result of the monitor of the guy next door. Is there anything I can do to shield my monitor?

How far away is your monitor and that guy's monitor? maybe moving the power source(surge, UPS...) away might solve the problem... You can buy EM shields, but those are probably used for defending against Tempest.. and not really cheap.

A piece of soft sheet iron about 20gauge and 2 feet square from your local sheet metal shop should diminish the trouble a noticable amount. Just lean it against the wall or maybe tape it up. You might try moving it around a little for best affect. Back when soda pop cans were steel we used to flatten them out and tape them in position for magnetic shielding in a radar test-set modulator.

Mu Metal is designed specifically for magnetic shielding, but it's not cheap, and you probably don't need anything nearly that good. Any metal will stop the electrostatic field, but to block a magnetic field you need something that can be magnetized, like steel. But I'd first try plugging the monitor into a wall outlet located far from your neighbor (use extension cord if needed), and if that helps, wrapping the power cord around a toroid may help. Radio Shack sells split toroids for this purpose.

im pretty sure its the intereference from the tube that is the problem, not the power
