Monitor shared between two computers - default input and timing out of non-default

I've got a monitor that I share between a laptop and a desktop. This monitor serves as a second monitor for the laptop and a third monitor for the desktop.

The monitor is connected to the desktop via DVI and to the laptop via VGA. If both computers are connected, the monitor defaults to the DVI input (desktop). I have to manually switch it to the VGA input (laptop). Once switched to the VGA input, after several minutes of inactivity on the laptop, the monitor will switch back to the DVI input, even though the laptop screen is still on (i.e., laptop has not gone to sleep or even activated a screensaver).

I'd like to either:
1. make the monitor default to the VGA input, or
2. stop the monitor from timing out the VGA input

Any suggestions?

see if there's a setting in the menu about the input choice. mine has an automatic setting that i've turned to off.

which monitor is it?

You nailed it.

I was using the Input setting in the Menu, which basically means hitting one of the buttons to toggle the input. But in a submenu, there's another Input setting, and while it doesn't explicitly say so, this looks to be the default input.
