monitor settings to minimize eye fatigue?

So I've started working, and for at least a few hours a day I have to stare at excel spreadsheets. I've found my eyes would get fatigued though. I'm on a CRT monitor, ViewSonic EF70. Would turning down the contrast and brightness help? I've also lowered the resolution so I could bump up the refresh rate to 85 Hz. What else could I do?

Thanks.

Use the higher refresh rate possible in a medium resolution, use high DPI on fonts and use a tad lower brightness.

Seconded.

Also make sure that your face is at least 12" away from the screen and that you can still see clearly.
