Monitor scaling issue

I have an LG flatron L2010P (1600x1200) and when playing games or doing any resizing or the resolution, the monitor automatically rescales the picture so that the full area is used. Ive been trying to get it to stop doing that by, purchasing a DVI cable so that i have the do not scale option in the ATI control panel, also installing the drivers. I have run out of ideas. How do i edit this?? Thanx

I've had bad luck scaling with ATI cards. The only scaling I've ever seen work is 1920 x 1200 scaled to 1600 x 1200. I've alos been able to get 1280 x 1024 scaled to 1280 x 960. Other than that, I've found ATI cards to not scale correctly. NVidia cards can do a little better, but can also have problems as well.

thats interesting. What about 3rd party programs that "fool" the system, by putting a black box around the rest of the screen. Do they exist?

PowerStrip can do that.

Ok, ive been fooling around with powerstrip, but i dont understand how to create a black box around my screen. any ideas?

Are you sure that powerstrip can do this? I haven't seen anyone say they got it to work successfully with the newer ati cards.

Ok, it wasnt just me. im sure there must be a tool out there to do that though.

Oh well, i got the 7800GTX (still not built into the case), but im hoping it will be able to run my games at 1600x1200, i dont care too much for all the AA and AF stuff

Well, with Nvidia you now have the option of using less than the maximum area whereras with ATI you didn't (less than max horizontal anyway). So, you could run games at, say, 1280x960 using 16" of the 20" with higher quality settings.

true, i dont have a wide aspect ratio monitor though, wouldnt that get annoying if i could only alter the horizontal resolution? Ill see how it works out when i get everything built.

Any lower resolution can be run centered with teh Nvidia. Indeed wide format ratios are possible if you likey, especially in combination with custom timings where those you want are not otherwise offered by a game by default.

For instance, quasi-wide 20" 1680x1050 displays obviously have less area than yours and you could match that effect with 1600x1000 while still being less demanding than 1600x1200. Or else you could drop down to 1440x900 or whatever as an intermediary resolution performance-wise between that and common 1280x960.
