Monitor resolution question (Dell 1703P)

Well, as the topic states, I recently got an lcd Dell monitor. In my old CRT I had my screen resolution to 1600x1200, and I would like to do the same to this 17" lcd monitor. I know that it wont appear as cleanly as my old CRT, but I would at least like to TRY


However, under properties from desktop, it won't let me bump the res up from more than 1280x1024. Some of my friends have lcd monitors and they can 'overres' their monitors, I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

I wouldn't go there... If you have a 17'' then 1024x768
is kind of a sweet spot. No point of pushing it really.
Especially on an LCD...

'Over-res'? Do you mean that when they bump up their resolutions, they are still able to run them really high, but their screen has to scroll, right?

To my knowledge, you cannot 'fit' a resolution higher than the native one specified by the company on a LCD. However, you can 'run' them at higher resolutions, but like I said, the screen will scroll.

Could you have meant over-HZ?

That is possible if you look under advanced and then
fiddle with something saying "only show update modes
that the monitor can display" - sort of.

Then you can get a monitor that normally only can
display 1024x768 at 100Hz to display 1280x864
at 100Hz aswell (ok - sometimes the monitor
can't handle it and you get perhaps 93Hz on
the screen or so)

Can't over-res an lcd, it physically only has but so many pixels and trying to force a higher res simply won't do anything because you can't control half a pixel at a time. I'd ask your friends how they "over-res"ed their monitors and then prepare to be laughed at because they played a joke on you .
