Monitor resolution not recognized

I recently purchased a new Acer x193w 19" widescreen monitor with a recommended 1440x900 resolution. I want to hook this into a Dell Inspiron 700m laptop with an integrated Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller. The operating system is Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3.

The problem is that when I plug the monitor into the laptop's VGA port, it recognizes it only as "Default Monitor" and does not provide 1440x900 resolution as an option. To confirm that there is nothing wrong with the monitor I plugged it into a Dell Vostro 1500 running Windows Vista Business, which correctly recognizes it as a Generic PnP Monitor and provides an option for 1440x900 resolution. Moreover, I have plugged a different widescreen 19" monitor from Hanns-G into the Inspiron 700m, which immediately recognizes that monitor as a plug and play monitor and sets the resolution to 1440x900. In other words, we know that the Inspiron 700m can drive a monitor at 1440x900 resolution, and we know that the Acer monitor works fine with other computers. Thus, what can I do to make the Acer monitor be correctly recognized as a "Plug and Play Monitor" on the Inspiron 700m so that it runs at 1440x900?

Thanks very much,
