Monitor repair

I have a Hitachi CM812 21" monitor, bought off of eBay a few years back. It's served me well but is starting to get a shivery picture, and it makes a loud bong when I turn it on (so I just leave it on). I can see that it is going to go some time, probably within a few months.

So, is it economical to have such things repaired, or should I start shopping?

There are times when you can get a monitor repaired for a reasonable cost, but most often it does not work this way. First, unless you are close to a regional service center hub for your manufacturer - you're going to have to ship it - here you're luck to get away with $30. Then you have the diagnosis fee JUST to determine the problem - this usually runs $70-$90. Then you have the cost of the parts to repair the problem and THIS is where you can get into some expense. Rarely, you can have a diode, or a capacitor that can be replaced failry inexpensively, but in too many cases you are talking hundreds of dollars for the part(s) alone. Then there is the labor for the repair - which is highly specialized (read - EXPENSIVE) labor which varies in cost, usually in the northerly direction.

Think of this breakdown as an opportunity....to buy a new monitor.
