Monitor Refresh rates

In general, is it better to set the monitor to the highest refresh rate? I want to protect my eyes and have the least eye strain. I currently have it set at 100hz at 1024x768 resolution.

higher refresh rate = easier on eyes.

Try going down to 60 Hz in a dark room, then go up to 100 Hz. Let your eyes do the talking.

What he said. Unless of course it's an LCD, then refresh rate isn't the same as on a CRT.

damn i'm stuck at 85hz. think its worth it to go for 100 even though its not officially supported by my monitor?

In a dark room it really doesn't matter as much.
In a room with other artificial lighting, 60Hz will make your eyes burn in a hurry.

Indeed, higher is good for your eyes, but it can lose abit of the sharpness it had in lower refresh rates.

Everytime I reboot Win2k I notice the white default load screen at 60Hz right away, I usually look away until Windows is loaded and reset to my nice 100Hz setting.

Damnit, I've been using 60hz for years. No wonder my eye sight is getting worse. Any of you guys in the same boat? I would like to improve my eye sight from now on.

I've been using monitors on 60hz being that I'm poor and can't afford to replace them unless I fall upon a good deal.
My eyesight is bad, but it's been bad since I was 6 because of the shape my eyes took when I was growing up. It hasn't deteriorated since then.

It helps if you try looking at something other than a monitor every once and a while (say, look at a plant or fish-tank every 15mins) and also try not to sit in a completely dark room, where the only source of light is coming from the monitor. Damn, and I thought I didn't pay attention in the ergonomics class many moons ago.

Above 85 Hz, I can't see any improvement. And Samsung recommends not going higher than 85, so it works for me.

85hz here
I taught my friend to set her 60hz to 75hz. at first, she didn't notice any changes. after a few weeks, her bf messed with her monitor setting and she asked me how to set it back 😉

i run 1600x1200 @ 75 on my dual 19in CRTs i cant stand anything lower no matter what the res is. i cant tell teh diff if its higher

if you don't notice 60hz normally, just look slightly to the side of the monitor and see the huge flickering with your peripheral vision. i don't have to do that, 60hz at libraries and schools and other places where people don't have a clue about setting these things up bug me to no end.

higher the refresh on a crt the better. better monitors have higher refresh rate capabililties and at higher resolutions. the crts have guns in the back that light up the phosphor pixel matrix on the screen frmo what i remember. the phosphor(sp) pixels fade rather rapidly, and the guns draw the image line by line, so the more rapidly it does this, the more stable the image.

lcds on the other hadn draw all pixels at the same time, so no flicker. all pixels can stay on, or off, its different. at 1hz it would only change once a second and basically be flicker free. but 1fps would suck🙂 60-75hz is fine for lcd
