Bascially i have been using a Gateway monitor from my 1.8ghz p4 i got last sept and am wondering if i should upgrade or if i should stick with what i got.

Its an ev910. Its 19" and does 85 hz at 1024x768 which i run at on up to 1600x1200
link

The link says 75hz max but when i go into the properties and choose hide modes it cant display 85hz stays lit up and thats what i use.

I used to use a 19" Hansol Monitor which I thought was pretty good at the time. It died and I decided to get a quality replacement. I ended up buying a 22" NEC fe2111sb flatscreen crt monitor. It made a big difference. At the time, early summer, I was planning on replacing my video card but the improvement with the NEC was so dramatic that I held onto the video card for a few more months and when I did finaly replace it the image was even better. It does 85hz at 1600x1200. NEC/Mitsubishi make an even better monitor called the 2141/2070 but it's a bit more expensive and I couldn't bring myself to pay that much. However there's lots of good monitors to choose from other than NEC of course, I think Sony makes a good one, so read up on them a bit and also buy from somewhere with a good return policy. I bought my NEC from Dell and had no problems returning the first one for a replacement with no charge for the unit or shipping.
