I've got msyelf two choices of monitor here.

one is a viewsonic and one is a philips. They are nearly identical on the spec sheets.

The philips has a 4 year warranty instead of a 3 on the viewsonic.

The only other possible is a Ciecro (made by Hansol I think), but I'm not sure what to think of that.
It's a size large, and not that much more expensive, so I'm worried that it might be cheapo...

For various reasons these are the only brands I'm considering, so please don't add in any others.

I've gotten one recommendation on the Philips so far, but that's just one. What are the opinions of the group?

Again, I have to stress NO OTHER BRANDS PLEASE. I know that Viewsonic and Philips aren't the best possible choices, but I have my reasons.

Unless Ciecro happens to be a decent brand, I'm going with the Viewsonic or the Philips.

What do you think?

I can't comment on the Philips as I've never owned one, but I've had lots of Viewsonics and had 0 problems. I can't tell you anything about RMAs because I've never had to do one (granted I've only handled probably 30 or so, so not a huge number). I'm running 2 Viewsonics right now on this rig (a 21" and a 19"). I called tech support once with a question about frequencies and stress, the tech guy didn't know so bumped me to an engineer, took all of 2 minutes for the whole call. I lub the guys :)

Is the warranty really that important? I mean a few years ago 3 years was normal for a monitor, but I personally can't see me still using a 21" CRT in 3 years. LCDs will get cheaper and better. 3 years is quite a while, and 4 years is really out there. 3 years ago I was using a 17" Viewsonic, I couldn't imagine still using it.

not really....I'm just alittle paranoid right now because my monitor just burned out a transistor about 3 months after the warranty ended, and right now I'm broke because I'm a student.

But in a year I'll start work and then it won't matter so much.

Really I'm more concerned with quality.

I like viewsonic's myself, but Brian told me that he's not so fond of them, and prefers the Philips.

Just looking for a few more opinions.

I would take a Viewsonic over a Philips any day. I've had very bad luck with Philips products. I've worked with a lot of Optiquest (related to Viewsonic) monitors and they are very good.

I'd get the Philips. I'm extremely happy with my Philips monitor. Everything Philips build they build well. I have a Philips philishave electric razor that was built in the late 60's and I still use it daily. Also have a cd-burner from them that has never given trouble and backs every cd I own up copy protection or not.

Why do people think something that was made 40 years ago (or even 5-10 years ago) is any indication of how a company is today??? Companies change all the time. In the last 5 years Panasonic went from making top quality products to making absolute junk.

BTW, I had a Phillips CD burner and it was DOA.

I have never known Philips to market junk. The philishave is the best razor on the market even today (you americans call it something different - can't think of your name). I have 15 year old Commodore 1804S monitors (built by Philips) that still work perfectly and many other things besides.

Perhaps to some people quality doesn't matter that much, but it does for me at least. I fully expect my 109P20 to still be working well 15 years down the track. I doubt some of it competitors will be though.

My friend has a flat screen philips and I like it better than any viewsonic I've seen, but then again, the viewsonic's weren't flat screens either. (Flat Screen and not Flat Panel)

Philips hands down. It got so stylish design, ummm... I simply drool over those buttons. Philips is superior, but it's very expensive. I think it's worth the money since it's such good quality.

Monitor quality: Viewsonic vs Philips.

I would go with viewsonic beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Fkloster:
It will copy any safedisc2 protected cd when paired with clonecd or similar. Mine is 1.5 years old now, burned many, many cd's in it. Never had a problem.

Actually through my supplier the Philips is a bit cheaper than the Viewsonic.
