Monitor/Projector problem

I was trying to plug a projector into a monitor port on an IBM T20 laptop to project the laptop screen. The projector operates correctly, but is not picking up the laptop's screen. I've tried plugging in a second monitor to the laptop's monitor port, and the monitor does not respond. Is the port on the laptop broken or is this a software/driver issue?
