Monitor problems?

Hi all. I just bought a Samsung 17" syncmaster 753DF tonght from Best Buy. I hooked it up to my VAIO laptop, to test it out, since my system isn't built yet. The refresh rate seems to be really low, and when text is towards the center of the screen, it appears a bit blurry. WHen text is on the side of the screen, it looks a bit crisper. I've also noticed that I can see the pixels on the sides clearer than towards the center.

Is the refresh problem linked to the laptop? Also, is the viewing problem just part of having a flatscreen monitor (a first for me)?
