Monitor problems

Sometime in the last week i have noticed small glitches appearing at the top of my screen. at first it was only enough to distort the top bar or so of a web-browser and happened quite infrequently. what happens is that the top half inch of my screen gets compressed down so that the visable area is compressed to about 1/2 of its normal area. I wrote this off as a problem with my old gfx card (GF4 ti 4200) which at that point was damaged/dying (2 blown capacitators).

last night i installed a different gfx card (radeon 9700 pro) in hopes to fix my problems (in addition to the monitor problem i have a problem with 3d games but thats another story). the end result so far is that if anything the distortion is worse now on the new card than it was before (the distorted area appears to have nearly doubled, now encompassing around the top inch of my screen instead of maybe 1/2 inch). since it has continued to be a problem with multiple video cards i am worried it might be my monitor crapping out on me.

the monitor is a 17" ViewSonic A70 from ~1999

sounds like she's on her last legs pal, if you have a best buy near you drag the monitor to the geek squad bench and have them plug it in

Mine has pin cushion at the center of the screen. If you view a circle it appears oval at the center of the screen and as you move the circle toward the edges it appears normal. I just love it when I buy cheap stuff.

Unfortunately what you are describing is monitor failure. Your method of testing it was a good way (replacing the vid card and seeing if the same results happen).

As others have suggested, start shopping (I know where you can find some good deals 🙂 )and prepare a decent funeral for the monitor that has served you for the last few (I hope anyway) years. 🙂
