Honestly, I would get a 27" and keep the other stuff (TN or IPS etc) secondary. However, if you are happy with 24", go for any IPS panel, any IPS panel should be able to beat a TN panel in terms of colors and quality, not in terms of ghosting though :)

Go for the BenQ if you spend most of your time on the computer playing games. If you do any general use (internet, movies, whatever) or work (document creation/consumption like homework or workwork) then by all means get the Dell 16:10.

Ultimately even for a lot of "hardcore" gamers the positives of the IPS would outweigh the negatives imo. The 16:10 ratio just makes content consumption a lot easier. You owe it to yourself to make your computing experience as awesome as possible.

So with that in mind, I think you should take out a loan and buy a 2560x1600 display and a 120Hz display as a side monitor for gaming. :awe:

I'd go 27" TN 60hz as well. 120hz only if you play fast competitive games

I'd love a nice 27in monitor but it's not in budget. :/ Just realised I forgot to include an actual budget.

I've reworked the system so I've more money to spend on the monitor so it's about £250-£300.

edit:

My old setup is two 19in 5:4 1280x1024 monitors so ANYTHING is gonna be a massive upgrade!

Will probably keep one or both for an extended desktop setup.

Plenty of 27" monitors can be had for that price.

Here: Iiyama B2776HDS ProLite 27", £242. I have the B2712HDS, it is nearly identical, but the 2776 has LED backlighting which mine lacks. Great picture quality for a TN, excellent for movies and gaming (I play all my single player games on it), matte finish on both the bezel and the screen, and the stand is sturdy, rotatable, height adjustable. The main reason I picked Iiyama was the height adjustment. Few 27" monitors have it.

So 1080p is okay on a 27in? I'm sure I read on here (or somewhere) that for a monitor that size it's just a bit big (or small. you know what I mean anyway) and should only go for 2560x1600 on a display that size.

Yes, there will be too many jaggeries at 1080p with that size. But applying AA on 1080p will probably toll less than 2560x1440. Although jaggies are there even with a good amount of AA. It depends, how AA intolerant are you, I don't mind jaggies that much, so tis fine to me :)

Being a user of a 27" 1080p monitor, I can't agree with that. It looks great. Of course with AA, but with a fast GPU like that, there's no reason not to use AA. And several games these days come with post processing AA that doesn't even tax the gpu much

The 120hz monitor for sure. Ive heard the Benq's are great gaming monitors, although Benq has never been a brand that impressed me enough to purchase one.

If you do decent gaming, do yourself a favor a get a 120hz monitor.... I just purchased a Viewsonic 2268wm and its pretty sweet. Its only 22" but I dont need larger. Going from 60hz to 120hz makes a difference. You notice it even on the desktop.

If you get one and want to test, just set the monitor to 60hz for a few days. Then go back to 120hz and you will never go back.

I appreciate 120hz as well, I have a 120hz 22" samsung for fast paced online games. But I still prefer the 27" 60hz screen for single player games, it's just a whole different level in terms of immersion.

120hz is noticed on desktop too, but only if you're looking. It's not a significant enough difference to matter on desktop.

I guess if you are one of the people who play at incredibly large ridiculous resolutions and have under 50 fps or so in games, I might see the debate of going to 120hz. Past that scenario though, I fail to understand the logic of anyone who "games" and uses an expensive video card to then play at 60hz. 60hz is terrible... I actually get headaches playing at that refresh rate. I have no issues with colors or quality with my 120hz monitor, I just dont look that closely(or care). Id rather have the 120hz for sure.

As I said, game at 60hz for a few days, then change it to 120hz and you will never do it again.

Why under 50 fps? Constant 60fps vsync'd on a 60hz monitor is what I'd aim for.

I'm a living proof of gaming at 120hz and switching back to 60hz and not being any worse off for it. So that's just your opinion - doesn't necessarily apply to others.

I understand, but the question id still have is...why? Buy a $300+ video card then game at 60hz? That doesnt make sense. Just sayin. Obviously people have different priorities and objectives with their computers and thats fine but, anyone who "games" on a regular basis with an expensive rig then uses a 60hz monitor is fail logic to me. :)

whatever you do, dont buy TN!

they will show you tasty prices and 120Hz, but you stay firm.

DO NOT BUY TN

Fallengod, agree to disagree I guess. You say it's fail logic but I just don't see the logic in what you're saying. Logic is objective, but taste in monitor size and refresh rate etc is subjective. To me it's perfectly reasonable to spend over $300 on a video card and play on a $300 27" 60hz panel.

I will never ever own a TN panel. Sorry, S-IPS image quality and viewing angles ruined me.
