sorry about the repost, but i posted the original in the general hardware forum. my bad.

my monitor (which is 4 yrs old) has an odd problem. the monitor just turns off on its own, but the power led on the front of the monitor shows green (still on). i then turn off the monitor and then on again and badda bing the monitor is back up. but this can happen lik multiple times in a minute then not for 10 minutes and then 2 times in 5 minutes. totally random, but it seems to happen when i right click open new IE browser pages. could be coincedence. i have checked all cables and plugs and no problem

Try hooking it up to another computer and see what happens. If it's the same thing, your monitor is dying.
 
I have actually had luck with hitting the side of a CRT monitor (but not too hard)... Check your power settings too - not that I really think thats it, but its a possibility.
