Monitor Overheating?

Since the computer in my sig has not even been shipped yet, I am using an old (1992) PS/2 to type papers on in my dorm room. The monitor I use with it is a 1989 NEC MultySync 3d, with a resolution of 640x480 at ~56Hz. Noticed tonight that the monitor was very hot after about two hours of use. I could actually smell solder. Interestingly enough, only the top of the monitor case was hot, the sides, bottom, front (screen), and rear were fine. The top, however, was about as warm as the hood of my car gets after an hour or so of driving. Is this fairly normal among older monitors? It is quite possible that it has been like this forever and I only just noticed but I want to make certain that the thing isn't going to catch fire on me or anything.

It might be full of dust bunnies plugging up air circulation. You might unplug it and wait a few minutes, then carefully take the cover off and blow it out with canned air.

dkozloski: I think I'll try that, thanks. I miss really obvious things sometimes. I suppose it only has to last until the computer in my sig finally arrives (ordered 10 July, expected shipping date is 7 November), but I would hate to have the thing die on me, already had one monitor on another machine do that. (It was working fine, I left the computer for about a half hour, came back, woke it from "sleep" and the computer awoke but the monitor didn't.) Thanks again.

DUST, DUST, DUST. Definately dust, but your gonna have a hell of a time getting it off with just canned air. @ work we use commpressed air specifically for this. All you need to do is unplug your monitor for about an hour and you should be cool. I have messed with countless montors and never been shocked. Just don't go takin sh1t apart. Take the cover off and do your best to get as much dust out of there as possible. And believe me if its a 1989 model its gonna be dusty as hell. Good luck.
