Monitor or video card?

I have monitor question. A friend has been having weird stuff show up on the monitor, and since she lives three hours away, I can't see it. She is describing vertical lines on the monitor, and then she says she saw a "message" on her screen, asking about pixels (some kind of wizard?). She says she just cliked OK until it went away, but now she's seeing dots all over the screen, which of course makes the text kinda hard to read. She reports that she's checked the connections, but she's not someone who ought to open up the computer.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 
She has the classic example of a bad video card. She is getting artifacts and lines all over the screen. It is time for a new card. She may have increased the resolution higher then what the monitor can handle and this could cause lines and multiple overlapping screens to appear.
