Monitor or vid card: strange "banding" @ high res

I've noticed this for a while, but it's finally starting to bug me: if I try to run at anything higher than 1024x768, whether on the desktop, in games, or in DVDs, I can see these bands across the monitor - looks almost like the colorbanding you can see in games when running 16bit color. That shouldn't be it; I've got the thing set to 32bit in display properties. So my question is this: which do you think would be causing the problem - my Creative Labs Geforce 2MX video card or the Samsung Syncmaster 950p monitor? If it's the monitor I guess I'm SOL - the return period passed a long time ago. Wonder if I could send it in on waranty? If it's the video card, can anyone reccomend a good, fairly inexpensive replacement? I only play games occasionally, so I don't need an absolutely top-of-the-line card. Just something with good 2D quality.

I had this problem with an Asus v8200. Maybe you can try changing the refresh rates? I had this issue at 1024x768@75hz. 85hz was fine.
If you want something with good 2d quality then look for a Matrox card.

Well, that seemed to clear it up - but I had to do the exact opposite and bump the refresh rate down. That seems strange, considering that the supposedly "optimal" setting for this monitor - and what I was running at - was 1280x1024 @ 85Hz. Knocked it down to 75, and things look a little better, but I can still see the bands in few places. Guess this means that I need to replace the video card. Or could it still be the monitor?

I got this problem when the cord to my monitor wasn't attached completely to my video card. Couldn't figure it out for a long time--guess I didn't think that it was connection problem. 🙂
