Monitor or HDTV

So i'm looking to buy a new LCD monitor around 22-24 inches.

At this point I'll be using it with a computer with a VGA output (but i can always buy a DVI to VGA converter i guess)

an Xbox360 (i have HDMI cables and everything)

and hopefully i want to be able to use it with a digital cable box too.

Now the first two are really no problem and I don't actually have questions about. What I am curious about is that if i want to hook up a cable box, does that mean that I have to have a television, or can I use a computer monitor (or is there any difference).
I'm moving and i don't know exactly what the cable box is like, but I'm assuming it's coaxial cable or something, which I don't think computer monitors have as inputs. So i guess my question is what kind of output comes from a cable box, and is it something that i could use with a monitor say something like a Gateway FHD2400 (or similar).

Apologies if that was horribly unclear, let me know if there is clarification needed.

You can use a lcd monitor for a tv . The only problem you may have is connecting it to the cable box. If the cable box doesn't have hdmi outputs that could be a problem. You could always connect the cable box to a capture card in the pc or you can buy a converter box like this one that will allow any cable box/dvd player to play on a lcd monitor.

The difference between a monitor and a tv is usually in the resolutions supported and the connectors.
